    Thanks Chinatown,

By private, does this still include support from the DOL and not going through a company sponsor?

I read IndianaMike's entries on joining R&L running dedicated with his wife. Started them out on a Prostar rig, very nice with $317/day rate EACH...they've since had raises. That's really good money. I've been in insurance sales and it's rather hard to reach those figures on a daily basis, much less sustained.

I hope to start out in the $1250-1500 a week range and work up to $2k+ sustained. Is this realistic for a solo?

My biggest worry is not knowing which questions to ask when talking with recruiters for driving positions to insure I am making a good decision. Anyone have a good go to for a list of must ask questions when considering a carrier?

Thanks again everyone, really appreciate the brotherhood/sisterhood in the industry, very encouraging.

Private school as opposed to a trucking company inhouse school.
R&L Carriers required 12 mos experience before they will hire.
The money you want is available with hazmat/tankers. Some drivers that post on here make that every week with Schneider Bulk. Most tanker drivers "take home" at least $1000.00 + weekly. Trimac Transportation "Elite Fleet" drivers can make over $100K running OTR. Unless the rules have changed, it takes 24 months to qualify for the Elite Fleet.
Here's a list of hazmat/tanker companies that hire new cdl grads:
    Schneider Bulk
    McKenzie Tank Lines
    Trimac Transportation
    CTL Transportation
    Service Transport - www.svtn.com
    Superior-Carriers
    Tidewater Transit
Note - for hazmat/tanker jobs you will need hazmat/tanker endorsements plus a TWIC ID Card. Google for nearest TWIC office. Probably one in Chattanooga.

Do you live near Augusta? Superior-Carriers has a terminal there I think. They're particular about which cdl school you graduate from.
Trimac Transportation has terminals as far west as the coast of California. That's some good long runs or their OTR and Elite Fleet drivers.

Hey Chiinatown, thanks...just finished one the many raking my yard efforts for the season...glad it's done before the rain. Glad to log back in and see your post. Yes, I saw Schneider's offerings as well as Trimac. I was surprised to read on Trimac's site that they will wave the 1yr exp for exceptional students. I'm hoping to speak with them before training to see what those benchmarks are so when I'm in school I have something to aim for. I like their offerings. Very good pay.

Trimac also requires the school be PTDI or CVTA and AmericasDriverForce is accredited. They are recognized by the state of GA as well so I think this is where I'll end up. I live in Stone Mountain GA east of Atlanta and the ADF school is only 27 miles away. Best option.

Trimac is looking pretty good to me right now. 100K is the goal.

    Thanks again Chinatown!

So I did forget the importance of staying healthy and I've heard the best lane for that is flatbed. Would flatbed be an option with some of these carriers without sacrificing too much income?

You're in a good location. All those outfits I listed have terminals in Savannah,GA.
    Trimac is a good choice.

I don't know of any that pay that well, just starting out. Maybe after 6 mos. or 12 mos. driving experience you can. Some outfit like Lone Star Transportation of Bulldog Hiway Express but not positive on that.

Great News! I am now a holder of a class A CDL license from the state Georgia. I completed my schooling at Georgia Driving Academy and very happy with my decision to go with this school. Great folks and great training. I feel for them though because they have to deal with more than their fare share of unsavory students who seem to "know it all" or show up late every day or have bad attitudes. I stayed focused and hammered through while trying my best to steer clear of the rif-raf...I am happy to report I graduated as the Honor Student in my class too. I am more proud of this accomplishment than I ever was with obtaining my Property & Casualty insurance license or Series 65 Financial advisor exams.
