Since I've been accused of poking fun at other technicians technical abilities I figured I'd revive this and mention that just because Jack was dishonest it doesn't make him any less of a technician. From a technical standpoint his work is among the best in the country even if he's not the world's greatest businessman. And yes he did screw one of my friends over in a similar fashion but it doesn't take away from his knowledge or expertise.

From the description offered by the cited post and your friend's reported experience, not being the "world's greatest businessman" would seem to be a colossal understatement.

I just figured I would mention his excellent technical skills since folks accuse me of not giving technicians credit for their skills.

Konnections electronics in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Located at 1-94 exit 295, head south. Past Steinhafels 1/8 mile on right hand side, Looks like a house. Bobtail there as the lot is not big at all. I had my Superstar 158 EDX fixed there, bought a General Lee and both work excellently, rates comparable, or a little cheaper. He always has radio on CH 19. There is a Quik Trip at exit 293 where you can drop trailer.

When I lived in northern Virginia I used Roger from fairfax radio. He retired several years ago.

Leave your RF Gain control all the way up. This is the receive sensitivity control for your radio. If you want to monitor a channel but don't want to hear the hissssssssssss when there are no stations on, the adjust your squelch control until the hiss disappears and then just a tad more. Then the only stations you will hear are those that are strong enough to be understood.
This will not adjust or affect your transmit power or range. What you receive depends on the power of the transmitting station, the distance from the transmitting station, and various propagation conditions such as Sporadic E, ducting, and ionospheric skip. Of course the condition of your antenna system (antenna(s) and coaxial cable and connectors) will affect both transmit and receive.

The squelch is like putting up a wall that prevents incoming signals from reaching your speaker and the RF gain is like pulling down the window shade but still lets the light come through

Do any techs out there have any experience with a bird meter vs a coaxial dynamics meter? Any recommendations on a spectrum analyzer or a frequency counter? Thanks.
