It seems pretty simple. You have a driver running your truck and the truck broke down. It sounds as though you are renting your truck from Penske or you have at least attempted to rent a day cab from Penske.
Your driver refuses to drive the day cab even though you offered to pay for his hotels and some per diem.
So not only is the driver not making any money you the owner are not making any money. You're okay with that- for 3 weeks to have absolutely no money rolling into your business while you're going to be shelling out a ton of money for your repairs? So you bring absolutely no money into your business because your driver doesn't feel like working and you are okay with that? That sounds more like you are working for him then the other way around.
Then when you finally are getting the truck back driver says hey by the way I need to be home on my birthday. Sounds like he lets you know who the boss is when he feels like it.
Now this is the same driver that has not been checking the truck or doing the things that he supposed to do.
You can keep him if you like whatever, but your relationship is called the tail wagging the dog.
I wouldn't worry so much about losing him for this reason. Good drivers are hard to find. Bad drivers like it appears your driver is, they're everywhere. If you fire him today you can have his identical twin working for you tomorrow. Bad drivers are everywhere and very easy to come by not even a dime a dozen and worth even less.
Being lied to by my driver

This the main reason people dont want to work for O/O, it should be common sense you have to pay that driver. You expect that man to seat home for almost a month and not get paid because of your equipment????

Sound to me the driver was otr and you were trying to put him in a daycab to run otr knowing you. You would probably make him sleep in the daycab. If you to cheap to pay him while the trk in the shop i know you not gonna pay for an hotel room.

Pay the 60 dollars or whatever for a nice hotel, god only knows you tossed tens of thousands vigilantly into that list. -
Wow this thread is enlightenijng about whom it to work for.
OP your story has morphed to cover your actions it appears. Now you are employing a lifelong friend and offering everything in the world while he refuses to work. All of this is static obscuring the relevant info.
Yes comp anies pay for breakdowns. If you want to keep the driver pay him. If you do not keep your money and drive the truck yourself.Tb0n3 Thanks this. -
Well guys and gals, when you have drivers who "make mistakes" but made you lots of money over the years, it begs to ask you why in the hell don't you get that the driver who doesn't make mistakes can make you even more money over the years?
I would have fired the guy for refusing any truck I put him in as long as it is safe. I would expect to stick his butt into a hotel/motel for the night to make sure he is compliant and comfy but I sure not going to let him sit around not producing something and paying him for it.
