Livestock/Grain Hauling Rates

i keep getting calls from the broker i haul hopper for asking if im ready to go yet. apparently he has a lot of loads to cover at the moment. of course my truck is blown apart for winter maintenance at the moment. and i keep finding more parts i need to order should have been done already but whatever when its negative screw my ### out id rather be in the shop than out on the road anyway. spring fertilizer should be starting to move here before too long so ill probably be hooked to the covered wagon for a while when im ready to roll out.

 

I haven't been at this for long but for January I averaged $1.42 a mile and February I averaged $1.45 a mile. Thats every mile with a hopper so $2.84/ $2.90 a loaded mile. Sure would be nice to be in the areas where you all are making $4.00 a mile but if I quoted that I would never have a load and the license, and insurance still has to be paid. The market around here is pretty saturated, but I make more hauling off the farm then from local elevators. Usually about $.10 a mile or so more. Working on building more of a customer base for off the farm hauling. I get paid by the bu, but break everything down into a per mile base so I know how to quote people off the farm at different distances. Seems to be the trick to making more is the old saying "load heavy, drive fast"
