When it's $1.48/mile versus .48/mile why not aspire to be an o/o?

Do you think you get to keep the one whole $1.48?

    $1.48 blows....

You can probably survive for a while maybe...... but add in deadhead and down time and your out of business....

The high and mighty around here will say you can make money at that rate.....

I’ll say best of luck to you.

Of course not. Have to pay all your overhead, chief among that being fuel expense. It would be interesting to see some statistics around how many o/o's fail and versus how many succeed at it.

For me it would be the satisfaction of having and running my own business but as double yellow's thread makes clear, there is a whole hell of a lot to it.

Is it difficult to get a dedicated lane so that you are never deadheading?

And who pays for fuel, breakdowns, tires, all the little things that will nickle and dollar you to death?

All on you. But if you're getting $1.50-2:00/mi the money will be plentiful right?

Don't forget the cost of the truck in the first place.

The shoot from the hip number that I see quoted the most is $1 per mile to run the truck.

To achieve that cost per mile you have to run a bunch of consistent miles. AND BE VERY LUCKY ON BREAKDOWNS.

Most of the failures I've herd about/witnessed can be traced back to not having the financial resources to repair a broken (or about to break) truck.

You are basically taking on all the financial risk with no financial benefit (until the truck gets paid off) with that contract. Then once the truck is paid for you need to start looking at trading it away because its worn out or in need of Major service money.
