    Hello,

Which is better in terms of job satisfaction and work life balance: Linehaul (ie Old Dominion, Estes, etc) vs Local Fuel Tanker (ie Cox Petroleum, Superior Tank Lines, etc?

My understanding is that both involve night work, but the pay and treatment by company is better in linehaul, while potential for more days off in local fuel tanker.

I am looking to get in to trucking, have my CLP and will have CDL in 6 months God willing. Coming in to trucking as a mid life, second career.

I need to work a solid 10 years. After months research and talking to other drivers I have narrowed my goal to one of these two fields.

However, the career satisfaction for linehaul drivers at Old Dominion, Estes, etc seems higher in online reviews thsn local fuel tank haulers. The reason being how the top companies treat linehaul drivers vs how top petroleum hauling companies treat their fuel tanker drivers.

Talked to a Cox petrolum guy the other night and he seemed happy (maybe he thought I was a company rep?). However, mostly drivers had bad things to say about how Cox Petroleum and Superior Tank Lines, treat their drivers unprofessional.

Anyone with direct experience in these two different trucking fields, would love to hear from you.

If you're looking for a good life balance, why not consider USPS.

You work 40 hr weeks and if you want OT you can request it.

Plus you don't have to drive a Tractor trailer either. You can apply to be a motor vehicle operator and drive a 11 ton (it only pays less than 1k a year compared to Tractor trailer)

I have researched that career path USPS MVO. Takes forever to get hired for permanent,if ever, and until then many drivers had very low hours and low checks couldn' pay bill. The reason is the pension.
I will look in to it again. Thanks.

Anyone have input on the Linehaul vs fuel?

I have done both, and I personally enjoyed hauling fuel more. However, I dont think you can go wrong with either. Fuel hauling is typically always going to be home daily/nightly. Depending on the company and your specific location linehaul can keep you out for a few nights, however they will put you up in a hotel. Linehaul can be very difficult to get a daytime shift. Fuel hauling is easier to get onto days, but thats because dayshift usually pays much less than nights (if your on load pay at least).

Personally, the only reason I would do fuel hauling over linehaul is because I like a little bit of variation in my day. I couldnt take running the same route for more than a year. Both jobs have some cons and both have some pros. I will say that linehaul generally pays more, but you wont go broke hauling fuel.

Woody, thanks for taking the time to write that. Can you address how you were treated as a driver Linehaul vs Fuel.

were your companies in the Northeast?

Well, when I ran linehaul I worked for one of the worst LTL companies. So it wasnt even much of a competition. The fuel company treated me well. You can find trashy companies on either side, and certain companies are completely different from one terminal to the next. I had fun doing linehaul even if the company I worked for was trash. You get a few drivers who run the same shift as you, and start a 3 way phone call and talk all night long. Then when you come back to do dock work you just chase each other around with forklifts and see how upset you can make your dock manager hahaha. I did end up working more hours doing linehaul, but its an easy easy job. Fuel hauling is a hustle, and it has a little bit of physical labor involved.

Also both of my jobs were in florida.
