Well the answer to your question will depend on the company you work for and how they pay you. For example some companies will pay you by % of what the load pays. Others will pay you a flat per Mi rate. Others could pay a mix of per Mi mixed with flat rates per pic/drop ect....
I don't know how different it would be out there than here but I can tell you at my last company I was pulling flatbed to the US and it paid a low per mi rate of 0.34/mi but added $10 to cross the border, $35 for every drop/pic, $100 for NYC, and $75 for any city deliveries. so in the end it all worked out, and I was making more than some of the guys I talked to who made just flat rate of 0.45/mi so it's all in how they break it down.TheBandit Thanks this. -
so 45c a mile works out to be $550 to calgary and back to Vancouver. I think what they want to pay me is closer to 40c a mile which is $500. It is not pin to pin.
I have to load in vancouver 9am mon and unload in calgary 9pm mon at tv warehouse and then reload at a matress warehouse 10am Tue the then unload the following day 9am Wen then im of till Thur 9am and then the same trip again.
So the only full day i get off is sunday. They said that when i get back to vancouver at 8-9pm I can just leave the truck and not return the next day to unload it and someone else will but they will take $25 off the run which means im getting $475 to calgary and back with loading/unloading 3 times and fueling twice which i do not get payed any extra for.
Does this sound like im getting bent over? cus it feels like it. They cant find drivers that are not Meth Heads. so i get the impression i could ask for a lil more what should i say the going rate is?Last edited: Dec 24, 2008

Well that's not too low. I just worked out that trip as if it were one of mine and it would have paid me about $513. It's about 600mi one way X0.34 =$204x2 for round trip is $408 then add 35+35+35 for each pic/drop brings you to a total of: $513 for the whole trip to and from Calgary. So I'd think you might be on the low side but it's not WAAYY off or anything.

great thats all i really needed to hear. I cant be talking low pay as that brings rates down for all drivers if there are guys out there doing it for less. I dont wanna "be that guy" thanx for all the help happy holidays.

No problem, hope you can get an increase as your right if they find someone to haul it for cheap why would they pay anymore than they have too. But it's starting to get stupid.
Have a happy holiday and maybe we will see you out there some time. -
When I was with Arnold Bros. they were paying about 38 cents a mile or so for hauling cans to Alta and back to Vancouver. I was the city driver there for a few years.

i just did the drive i got loaded sunday at 11amm in vancouver and took hwy 1 as the coke was to bad and got edmonton at 5am sleept till 7am and dropt my load at 8am. i had to wait around for the second half of my load so didnt really get a chanse to sleep and i finally hit the roads back at 5pm monday and drove all nite to get back to vancouver for 8 am Tues with no sleep. so i got 4 hours sleep total since sunday to tue and thats 3 nights ways from home and iv been a sleep from tues 8 am to wen 8am. so i was on duty from 10pmsun to 10pm tue minus 4 hrs sleep which means i worked 44hrs divided by $550 for the 1400 miles at $40 cents works out to be $12.50 an hour not including hours i sleept. i use to get $20 an hour driving intown. i think im quiting

You are breaking the law on several fronts and now just admitted to doing online. It's a 13hr run by trimming time on your log, and that's just driving time from Vancouver to Edmonton, so by showing you ran the Canyon you now added an hour to your run which is over by 1hr driving time. Then if you sat around and waited for the call for your reload instead of resting, who is to blame for you lack of sleep. Does your company pay for unloading and loading by the hour most give you an hr for each at a set rate of so much per hr so that would be added to your runs pay, if they don't find another carrier to run for. Did you get paid to run the Canyon or just opted to run that way so they might refuse the extra miles.
If working in the cities and getting paid by the hour yes you would get more for taking your time doing your job, but then it only runs so far then you have to account for the extra time.
The running with out sleep is only your doing which will put your in their books as someone they can flog, don't run like that. It's always been a practice to trim your log so you can keep driving so in the end of the week you can get home for the weekend with more miles done, which means more money on pay day. Will you do things for free? yes but keep it to a minimum, and the miles will seem easier for you to take. -
