Another question i just thought of.... do you think that a company would sign on two drivers in this type of scenario? As owner-ops that is...

Also, does anyone have any idea what the insurance issue would look like? Two drivers signed up with one truck? The only way it could be ideal is if the insurance payment could feel like half of a monthly insurance payment.

I wouldnt even consider that kind of setup if it wasnt a dedicated that you knew what miles who would drive each "shift". I tried the 3 man, nightmare, thought i could be home more with my babies, never saw a day off with even some coins in my pocket, 3 months and i killed the "team"...
We never knew who would be home more, or who would be stuck out more. It wasnt a dedicated.
Definately do your homework, i speak from experience, i am presently trying to get my business off the ground, yes it is a nightmare out here now, though it can be done. Yet i would not advise you to do so until you know as much as you can cram into your brain about every last detail. Talk to folks who know and never quit, keep asking, and really listen hard when they share. Meanwhile, make sure your credit is up to snuff, usually the mid 600's qualifies for most loans, with 10% down. Learn about the bookeeping, even if you have a bookeeper, you need to know what they are doing. Learn about the laws, the tags, baseplates, permits, everything required to legally run a truck. Learn about brokers, possibly have the wife or sister or family member you can trust, maybe a best friend, go through broker school. Its a thought... Possibly even yourself, then you know whats going on... Some courses are 1-2k and take a couple of weeks.. Worthwhile investment if you ask me, thats what were working on. Research all of your taxes, what can be taken and whats off the list, know your monies path, where it will go and for what. Learn about deisels: Cummins, cats, detroits, drive as many as you can. My personal prefference is a cummins 387...
Essentially, know every inch of the business up one side and down the other before you jump, and it doesnt take that long to really learn this stuff if its what you really want to do.

The above post by spiritdancer is one of the best ones that I have seen on ANY forum. If you observe what he is saying, and do as suggested, it should take you a long way.

Thank you guys. That is definitely some thoughtful advice. I intend to follow it 100%. I guess you can say there is no quick, easy way to find success, but with a some consistent, hard work things will eventually come together. I here you on the home time thing spiritdancer. To me that is the roughest part of the whole industry. I don't mind working my tail off, but being gone a lot can be pretty tough. Best of luck to all of us!

I don't see it working with your own authority. with your own authority you tend to sit longer looking for loads and then run for a higher rate. I don't se how tha would work with a 50/50 situation unless you had some guaranteed freight liner up somewhere

I've actually talked to a couple companies who said they would be willing to lease a truck on to that situation. DART was one and the other was Danny Herman Trucking. I think they have enough freight volume to get you to your desired swap point (or at least close). So that could be a decent situation. U still gotta find a good partner though--a truck is a big investment and i'm always more comfortable with me behind the wheel.

Pete 1989---you got any good advice on getting into intermodal? Maybe even working it with your own truck? Or anyone for that matter.

i'd be interested in intermodal because of where I live. I just can't ever find any information on it. Also when you look at the condition of the trucks runing it you kinda get the idea there is n money there.
