Yeah, really. I don't see what the big deal is. Sure, the lying to the company wasn't bright. But, jumping into a truck and getting some good ole fashioned OJT never hurt anyone. Kind of like the old timers did it.

You know, one could make a great argument about the benefits of doing it this way. These 'training' programs teach how to pass a test, and inspire false confidence. You don't encounter real life situations on a test track or a 'range'. Therefore, graduates have zero clue what to do. And will react accordingly.

But you take a person who learned on his own, while he won't be perfect, he'll have encountered everyday situations, be a little more cautious, and remember what not to do the next time something goes sideways .

I would think a 80k home every night is a pretty sweet job to lie to.

I didn’t go to one of those truck driving schools. I did it exactly the way you described, on the job training. I agree with you, that it was better, in the end. BUT (you knew that was coming, lol), it took me AT LEAST most of the 1st day before I could even get the truck to move and get thru the gears. NO WAY could I have jumped into a busy yard, at zero dark thirty, and hit the ground running without anyone noticing.

I’m not saying it’s hard- it’s not. It’s easy. But i had used various vehicles with several different clutches for many years. I had a basic understanding of how it should go. This guy doesn’t. I hope it turns out well for him, but there’s no way in the world that I wouldn’t notice if a guy told me he knew how to drive and then attempts it for the 1st time on day 1

Definitely agree it's not hard but also definitely agree it takes practice probably a week or two of steady practice before your not abusing the poor truck anymore.
If I was the op I'd definitely would have tried to get at least a little hands on before jumping in cold

His prospective employer likely won't be too happy when he shows up and it turns out he can't shift worth a #### and they have a run planned. Anybody need a good local job. ;) :)

they can easily call in another applicant. if no one is available, they can pass off some of those stops to another driver. ain;t like something like that, has never been done before..
