I'm a 38 year veteran of trucking and started learning how to haul cars in 2002. Im currently employed by a reputable carrier and coming up on 2 years next month. The reason I'm considering a change is because I have a fiance that I've been in a relationship with for over 2 1/2 years. She will be coming over here from the Philippines in about 9 months and I don't want to be living the life I live now being gone from home all the time and a no rider policy. I was thinking that by having my own equipment I might be able to take some extra time off from time to time and she can ride along with me as well.
I won't even begin to purchase equipment until the numbers tell me the right story. I spoke to a driver the other day in PA. He had a 4 wheel Pickup and was transporting an RV trailer. He said he makes between $1.20 and $1.60 per mi depending on the length of the trip and the size of the RV trailer. He said if I jumped on board with a trailer and could carry 2 at a time the rate would be closer to $2.40- $2.60 per mile. Manufacturer is in Elkhart, In.
I live S of Cleveland, Oh. I was also considering a trailer that would give me many options.
Have the hotshot rates plummeted like the rest of the trucking industry or does it show some potential?
Any information on what to expect would be appreciated.

With a new bride; keep the stress low. She will need to relax and have a smooth transition into a new country and culture. Being an owner-operator, you won't have much time for that.
Be a company driver for awhile and give her time to adjust. Take her with you on the road so she can see the country. That's what I did after I brough my wife here from China. I was pulling reefers, so she got to see some rough parts of town and was shocked that some Americans live that way. She said,in school they were taught that all Americans are rich and live in nice homes.
I'd do that for awhile, be a company driver and take her with you, then decide later if you still want to be an owner-operator.
Check some companies that have nice trucks set up for driver comfort so she can ride in style.
Look at these outfits that will let you take her along:
Indian River Transport
Britton Transport
Freymiller
Holland Enterprises
Dutch Maid Logistics - Willard,OH - not sure how trucks are set up.
Schuster - nations largest ice cream hauler
MC VanKampen - not sure about rider policy, but nice trucks & no northeast.Last edited: Mar 25, 2018
