I don't think I understand this as well as I should.
When is it earned, and under what conditions/terms?

It's always earned, seldom ever paid
Toomanybikes, Hurst and RustyBolt Thank this. -
I'm leased on with Mercer. Sometimes we get detention. Sometimes we don't. Sometimes it pays decent. Sometimes it's a total insult.
I don't worry about it any more. If I get it, great. If not, oh well.spyder7723 Thanks this. -
Are you a company guy or working off loadboard?
-
Detention is the amount of time you are waiting at a dock to get loaded/unloaded. Company I worked at you had to wait 2 hours to start detention pay. Been awhile so dont remember the amount they paid

Usually after two hours getting unloaded.
Sometimes when you're being loaded.
Example : You're appointment is at 0600 for delivery. You are on time. You're not unloaded until 1000. You now are entitled to two hours of detention pay.
Some places you have to give them 3 hours before it starts. Check your rate cons carefully.
Usually it's capped at 7 hours for us. Which equals $350. Which is half as much as it should be.
It will start again the next day.
I've gotten $450 once for being there 11 hours. I've gotten jipped and been at a place 12 hours and gotten $250.
If you are late for your appointment, all bets are off. -
In an owner op leased on with a company. Detention is negotiated. Either in the rate con or at the time of the delay. Most times it happens after 2 hours rate is discussed at that time. Get it in writing before the load is delivered or you have no recourse. $ amount is all over the place.
If I see a problem brewing I’m on the phone with the broker right away negotiating. If they act to squirmy and I’m at the pickup waiting I will just bail if I can find something else. If I’m at delivery I get it in writing before unloading.
I fight to the death for detention. I don’t always get it but I do more than not.
You can not file on a bond for detention $ even if it’s on the rate con.Toomanybikes Thanks this. -
Oh, and if the rate con says FCFS for appointment time there won’t be any detention paid.
They get 2 hours then the games begin! I’ll use any tactic I can in that situation to get there crap off my trailer as fast as I can. I’ll raise hell, hand out popsicles, call the broker every 5 min, ask to talk to a supervisor, threaten to dump it in the lot. If all else fails wonder into the front office. That usaly gets something going. They don’t want truck drivers in the main office on there fancy carpet. What ever it takes if not paying detention.86scotty, Toomanybikes and Opendeck Thank this.
