I have hauled quite a few low volume temp controlled loads. Pharma. Imported specialty produce. Medical supplies. Once, I even hauled a load of air. Medical containers of pressurized air.
I'd say probably one in 10 OTR loads is a low enough volume to fit in a 24 foot box truck. Almost all of those are light loads.
Something I have not hauled, but mightd make a good, lightweight cargo might be flowers.
But I have no idea what straight truck load rates are. -
That's interesting to know. I know about expedited dry freight in straight trucks, but other than local, private fleets (produce, food service) I didn't think there would be a big demand for a straight truck reefer.

I haul a full sized reefer. My comment was not saying that a lot of demand was out there for smaller reefer trucks, but rather that there are a lot of loads that might be possible. There are other business reasons why a big company might put a small load in a big truck. Anonymity, for one thing.

Agreed. No joke, I ran a two pallet load of newspaper inserts out of Springfield, VA to South Florida one time. One pallet went to Atlanta and the other went to Deerfield Beach. When I went into the shipping office I asked the guy if there was a scale nearby because I thought I was loading a full 53' trailer and didn't want to go across the Dumfries scales without knowing what I weighed. He busted up laughing before telling me it was only going to be two skids.SteveScott and Farmerbob1 Thank this.

What a piece of crap. I would say that nobody in their right mind would buy it, but I've seen much worse on the road. Usually being towed by a tractor with several different color body parts from the junk yard. DOT just loves pulling those suckers in for inspection.rabbiporkchop and Farmerbob1 Thank this.

With some of those tight docks in some cities a small truck might be needed but they still have then dock the 53 footers in them but you might try hitting those folks up doing a cross dock type of run.
