Maybe. Depends on loads per truck. Some companies have more freight than they can handle, some have to broker, and some can't even do that, so their drivers sit. Only way to know about any particular company is to ask their drivers.

2.5 years or so. O/O for... 4 months. I love it. But it's tough, and stressful

Why do you want to get into Trucking? Do you not have other reasonable options?

My advice is to rearrange your life so that you can be with your family. Trucking is Last Resort.

Has your FIL checked into how much it will cost to insure you as a new inexperienced driver? It's not cheap by any stretch of the imagination. You will either work dirt cheap, or his profits will be taking a huge hit. Just something to think about.

Its not my last resort by any means. I have a stable job at this time. But it just does not pay what I would like. My father in law has been looking for a driver for some time now. And me taking this step would help my family as well as his business. Im not sure of the ins and outs of the industry just yet, But maybe it is for me?

What makes it stressful? What would you say are your personal pros and cons?

Good connections are like 90% of why I said it was a great idea. Out in the real world knowing people REALLY helps. You still have to perform the job adequately but it makes it substantially easier and alters your whole career trajectory if you end up being good at it.

Have you considered computer programming? After a few months crash course you will be employable and they make 80k+ Monday-friday 9-5.

But if you think tying yourself so closely to your father in law will be good for your family and your pride then do it.

I'll just say this. I've been driving for 4 years. The first two years I thought trucking was for me. On the third year became the hate. By then I was making too much money to bother making the switch.

But hey start trucking maybe it's for you like you said

In this day and age, it would most definately lower the cost. By how much? I wouldn't have a clue. But I would bet he would save nearly as much as school costs on his premiums in the first year. I have nothing to back that up. But I would still make that bet.
