Not OK to take a passenger with a year of experience?

    I've been thinking on this. Yup its your life. But its THEIR truck. Not yours. They make the rules. Regardless of company. They make the rules.


    If you want to make the rules, buy your own truck.

    This topic is starting to make me laugh. I was speaking last week to a good friend of mine that is a Captain in the US Navy and commands one of the ships that is part of one of the carrier battle groups here in Norfolk. The Navy has a program called (tiger cruises). Here in Norfolk most of the time they start at Mayport near Jacksonville Florida then on to Norfolk. Guess who BY rule can not go on a tiger cruise? His wife. No girl friends. Only your children a brother, sister or parent. This has nothing to really do with this topic but reminded me of it.

    His wife sometimes helps me get to appointments. She even took me to the VA ER back last year. Good lady. She told me that she would love to do a tiger cruise, but said the OD and the POOW would never allow her on the ship at mayport.

    I've seen some of those arguments while driving down the road. You can only hope he's using Bluetooth.

    I have news for you ,the driver is 100 percent responsible for every decision that is made once that truck is in motion regardless of whose name is on the registration.

    Lots of guys tell themselves that they "have to obey the rules" so they are not to blame for the results of bad decisions but the reality is that no company rule, civil law or insurance regulation is an excuse from responsibility.

    Many companies prohibit drivers from adjusting their own brakes, but any driver who drives a truck that he or she has not personally adjusted the brakes on has no business behind the wheel of a class 8 vehicle.

    It is terrifying to me how common it is today for drivers to easily and flippantly dismiss and disregard this responsibility as long as they can say "not my fault, thems the rules!"

    Knowing that an insurance company and a trucking company will be named on a lawsuit instead of you will not provide one seconds relief from the knowledge that only you made the decisions that led to every event that takes place.

    Drivers used to be very protective of this power, only the worst with few options would work for companies who tried to micromanage the inside of the cab.

    Opinions regarding whether a passenger makes a driver more cautious or more distracted are up to the individual, I do however think that studies have been done which conclude that drivers take fewer risks when a loved one is riding with them; regardless of which side of that anyone falls on the decision is related to the truck in motion and that means the only vote that counts is the drivers.

    The idea that you must or should surrender your autonomy because you "don't own the truck" is frightening because the resulting destruction that is possible is not altered in any way by whose name is on the paperwork.

    Nobody but me gets a vote in whether the truck is mechanically safe to hit the road.

    Nobody but me gets a vote on which routes I take on my trip.

    Nobody but me gets a vote on how my load is secured.

    Nobody but me gets a vote on who or what is in my cab at any time.

    If abandoning these basic autonomous responsibilities is really accepted as "the way you have to do it" by most professional drivers today then nobody is safe on a public road.
