The police will no doubt be looking to see if the setting sun was a factor, but I don't think it was. Sunset for Humboldt is approximately 7:45 PM, and the accident happened at approximately 5:00 PM.

you don't miss a gear, blowing thru a stop sign.
you miss hitting the brakes. -
@"semi" retired is talking about the timing of the crash; a missed gear, lingering for a few seconds at a prior stop, a slight lift of the throttle at some point... these vehicles would have never been close to one another. This is not a high traffic area. The randomness of it is almost incomprehensible.Mattflat362, Trucker61016, Opendeck and 7 others Thank this.

so are you saying the trucker stopped, then started going? if so, then that amount of damage and death toll for a slow moving truck would not have taken place.yes, and impact, but not as severe as what we have seen in the pics.
my "view" is that the trucker was cruising along, not paying any attention, and BAM.
killer in the making.rank, Trucker61016 and uncleal13 Thank this. -
No, that is not what I am saying and you're not really paying attention to what is actually written. The truck started its journey somewhere and some small delay (or the absence of same) along the way and this catastrophic event would not have happened.
Yes, it appears at this point that the truck didn't slow for the intersection. The circumstances surrounding that are under investigation. I would hope there is some mitigating circumstance, but I fear it is simple inattention... whether or not that involved some distraction such as a phone.Trucker61016, Woodys, uncleal13 and 3 others Thank this. -
I've had those weird situations. Come around a corner and there's a tree falling down on the highway. Then you think back to that idiot who cut you off 4 hours earlier that slowed you down and its like: "D### if he didn't slow me down that tree would have landed on me!"

ok..."timing" of events leading up to the crash...got it....!Woodys, 25(2)+2, not4hire and 1 other person Thank this.

Rumble strips before the stop sign would have prevented this too. Upper Michigan was the 1st place I had experienced rumble strips on the center line on a 2 lane. Do you realize how many lives would have been saved when 2 lanes were the norm years ago, when crossing center was the cause of most crashes?
I hesitate to include this, but we all have to go, and could Deity be involved somehow? Was it just chance the timing was perfect? Guess we won't know until the end ourselves. Maybe then it will make sense.Trucker61016, tinytim and not4hire Thank this. -
Lots of intersections do have rumble strips, but it is mostly high-traffic ones, or after such a tragedy...201 Thanks this.

Oh gosh. The number of advancements in road design and safety standards [most of] the US has implemented the past 40 years is incomprehensible by most except the older among us. The safety technology is literally around you every foot of the way, and typically goes unnoticed by many. Can you imagine all of today's traffic on the roads of the 50's and 60's?
I'm not sure how Canada has done as far as safety enhancements to the more rural roadway sections.Trucker61016, not4hire, tinytim and 1 other person Thank this.
