My advice on a pickup; get yourself a Dodge with the Cummins turbo Diesel, and older mechanical injector pump. Look around and you can get your hands on a clean unit for about 5 to 10 grand. Look at the prices of new ones, and that's why. also newer ones went to electronic injection. Leave the other 40 grand in your pocket.
Leave it stock; no lifts, no big stupid tires. When the zombie apocalypse comes, you can run it on vegetable oil. Better than all the lowered cars with the tires sticking out.
With the road conditions the way they are, (Terrible,) what could these people be thinking.

Many truckers do just that and so do fuel haulers.
Some fuel haulers make a special fitting for their hoses so they can leave fuel in the hose after a delivery. Then later they drain the hose into a can or container for use in their personal vehicle.
Some mechanics at trucking companies take 2 or 3 gallons of diesel out of each truck they work on, then use that in their diesel pickup truck or car.
It's not so much the money saved; it's the idea of getting away with it that makes it appealing to some.
All this is an open secret and like an inside joke.

My buddy is absolutely convinced he needs 12 ply mud tires on his half-ton because he goes 5 kilometers up a dirt road for firewood once a year. I hate riding in his truck. Tire noise alone is enough to drive you bonkers.

Sad thing is I do just as much driving on dirt roads as him and I just use regular light truck highway tires. Never had a flat off of the pavement yet.

Why not just fill your 5 gallon jugs with cheap red dyed off-road diesel fuel? Much cheaper than road-taxed fuel, and nobody ever sticks the tanks on private pickups to check for red dyed fuel. You'll save about $1/gallon.

Do you over the road guys actually get your tanks dipped anyway? Being the local guy iam, i i dont know of anyone that actually had their fuel checked? I have only had a few random road side pullovers and they never checked fuel.

I've never been anywhere a set of BFG TA/KO's weren't sufficient to get the job done. Even pushed a 6' round bale on a hay dolly uphill through hub-deep mud into a shed without slipping a tire. Excellent traction on the road, too, and don't make any more noise than an all season radial.

Unless you're seriously wheeling the thing on some wicked trails every weekend, those super-aggressive mud tires just scream "poser". Only thing more patheitic is the jacked up ride with 20" rims and rubber bands. If you actually USE the truck as a truck, a good all terrain tire is all you really need...and those don't make much noise going down the road.

I know a few farmers that have had their pickups checked. You don't want to see the fine if you're caught...all that money you thought you saved will be gone several times over.
