Sometimes mine smokes so much it looks like it's on fire ... unfortunately, it never is.
I've had the blow-by checked and it is well within tolerance.

Including mine. It for the most part is normal. and remember It looks worse in the winter months also. Steam shows up more in the cold weather.Markvfl said: ↑Walk through the lot of any truckstop on a cold night and you can easily tell which trucks have Detroits - the ones with the white smoke wafting out from under the engines

Remember way back when you could walk thru the truckstop parking lot and tell where the Detroit had been sitting.(for you younger people-it left an oil slick)Markvfl said: ↑Walk through the lot of any truckstop on a cold night and you can easily tell which trucks have Detroits - the ones with the white smoke wafting out from under the engines

Had one of those in a Crane I operated, never saw a engine lose so much oil!rjones56 said: ↑Remember way back when you could walk thru the truckstop parking lot and tell where the Detroit had been sitting.(for you younger people-it left an oil slick)Click to expand...

The Detroit I used to own was a dang clean motor. It didn't have a drop on it until the head gasket started to go at 968,000 miles. Now my '06 C-15 CAT with 218,000 on it is a different story. I can't keep the oil pan gasket from leaking and the dang thing has a lot of oil coming out of the breather.

That '06 is pushing a lot more boost, so that doesn't help any.

thinking about those old Yamahas and the oil slicks they laid down puts a smile on my face, damnifiknow why... let's see who knows what a "Yamaha" is, hehehehe

Yeah, I been around long enough to know.Markvfl said: ↑thinking about those old Yamahas and the oil slicks they laid down puts a smile on my face, damnifiknow why... let's see who knows what a "Yamaha" is, heheheheClick to expand...
Them "Yamahas" were just like the old Harleys- they didn't leak, they just marked their spot! -
How about the old saying "sounds like a bumblebee in a fruit jar".
My old 318 would use 1 gallon of oil every 700 miles, and it had a recent inframe. When parking overnight you always tried to find a spot that the ground leaned toward the passenger side so you wouldn't step out into oil the next morning.
"Yamaha" = 2 cycle motorcycle that resembeled the sound of an old Detroit wound out.
Mine had gutted mufflers and would turn 2550. From 2200 RPM on up that thing would scream.
