I'm curious if a self driving vehicle would've done better to slow down. Actually the truck may have recognized the stop sign and stopped itself. If they ever get self driving trucks to work in a city or rural area. This thing could be prevented with some kind of autonomous feature like auto braking or even communication between the bus and truck itself.

What are all the packages?? Like I assume that was some kind of open trailer to dump all that out. Cause a Van trailer wouldn't just peel open like that from just laying on its side usually?? I'm thinking even if he was going slow his truck may have been at max gross weight so perhaps that's how he ended like that. The bus plowed into a 40 ton plus truck at 62 and all the load shifted in the impact.

Couple of questions for the Northern Brothers, are buses speed limited and if they are I think it's only Eastern Providences? Secondly, to me, I don't think the truck IS that far through the intersection, meaning, he wasn't going that fast, I mean how long is that combo 90'? The back of that trailer even laying sideways and twisted isn't that far away. Just some thoughts.

Buses are not speed limited; not even in Ontario and Quebec where CMVs are speed limited.
Yes, 90 feet (27.5 metres) is the maximum legal length.
I don't see how the bus could have hit a trailer without doing substantial damage to any wheels or torn off axles. The left-side wheels are all intact. The side of the bus, OTOH, has very little structural integrity as they are almost stress-skinned structures similar to dry van trailers. This would explain why there is limited damage (but enough IMO if you look close) to the front of the truck.Last edited: Apr 10, 2018

I'm pretty familiar with how those buses are constructed and you're right, there isn't much to them, but as I said, looking at the photos, I will bet that bus hit the truck as it was going thru the intersection, I do understand what you are saying about the front of the bus looking like it was sheared off, but you "could" get the same effect if the bus hit the trailer, because it may just happen that where it's sheared off is at a point where the aluminum subframes of the bus were joined together.
I guess the other point I have is IF that truck blew the stop sign and was running say 70mph, knowing what the truck weighed I'm not sure that the truck winds up on its side, the momentum and the fact that IF the front of the truck hit the bus with little damage to the truck, then what caused the truck to wind up on its side?
Now if it was the bus that hit the trailer, esp near the pivot point, I can see that load becoming a handful real quick. jmho -
