looking for some suggestions about a truck. I currently have 3 trucks with no elds, one 12.7 Detroit’s and two N14s. Was thinking about buying a little newer truck. My mechanic said for the money I can get a Volvo with D12 and from what he has seen are pretty good engines. I only run maybe 2000 miles a week doing flatbed. Driver stay in truck about 2 nights a week so don’t think elds will effect what I do. Anyone with this truck and engine setup? Thinking about 2003-2007 with d12 and manual transmission. Don’t want the auto shift or whatever Volvo calls it.

    Oldironfan Thanks this.

Are you looking to add another truck or replace? I run a 05 D12 and yes they are good motors I love running mine but I would still prefer a N14 or S60 any day.

I wouldn't hesitate on buying one. Problem is they are starting to get into very high miles on them now days and they tend to be a throw away style truck and engine as it is not abnormal to see those engines with 1.4 1.6 million miles on them. By that time the truck itself is rotted and shot.

I own both a 05 Volvo Daycab D12 and 2011 Volvo 630 with Cummins ISX. The 05 D12 has 758000 on the ODO and uses 1 gallon of oil every 20000 miles. (Pretty sure it is from oil leaks) and I see 7 mpg during the summer running 80000 pounds one way and running empty coming back. That is in the hills too with the cruise on.

I was going to look for ones about 850k on them. Was thinking from what you have said and what my mechanic has said about the mileage which is around your 1.4 mark, I should very well make plenty in that time frame for a 14-16k dollar truck. Prices I have seen they are going for.

Last July, I picked up an early D12A (pre-2000) with under 700K original miles.

    I get 8.2mpg at 65mph with 35K in the box up/down on I-81.

Had a cracked head (leaked diesel into crankcase <---- VERY RARE) and just got it fixed for $3500 OTD.

Every one I've run into claims they are very good motors (unlike D13's). Only time will tell.

I thought the D12 was discontinued about 2005 or 2006.
Many people I talked to back then said it got better fuel economy than the D13 did.
