The "Old Guy" used to say, "Live, and DON'T learn."

Guess that explains why I see the brake lights flicker on for a split second every now and then on some trucks. The driver is jake shifting. I thought they were all just super scared and drove with their left foot on the brake pedal.
-
Really? So you don't think it's annoying when a vehicle infront of you keeps unnecessarily flashing it's brake lights? When I first saw this occuring I just assumed (incorrectly) that the person was a bad driver and I needed to steer clear of them. Especially on a downgrade.
It's not important to know someone has their jake brake on.
It only came to my attention when my girlfriend was following me to a truck stop and told me that I used my brakes way too much and that it was annoying. At the time I thought she was crazy because I didn't think I used them that much. Then I noticed one night on a very dark downgrade how I kept seeing this flash of red in my rearview when I kept blipping my throttle to maintain a speed. Super annoying. It makes you seem unpredictable and indecisive in the handling of your vehicle.
By your logic all cars should just have their brake lights come on as soon as they let off their throttle because their engine breaking will slow them down about as much as a fully loaded truck...hell why not throw in acceleration lights?
I actually use my jake less now because I don't want the person behind me to think I'm trying to communicate in morse code.
Maybe it's a stretch to say it's "dangerous" for them to come on with the jake but there was no epidemic of people rear ending vehicles because they couldn't tell they were slowing down with engine braking. If anything more people on the road means you need less information being thrown at you like a truck throwing on it's brake lights every 4 seconds...it's distracting and unncessary in an already congested environment.TaterWagon#62 Thanks this. -
There are a lot of things that are annoying. Ain't nuttn you or I or anyone else can do about it.
But if it makes you happen to complain. Knock yourself outdaf105paccar Thanks this. -
Actually there are things you can do about it and goal of my post isn't to complain but to disagree with you. Notice I didn't say much about it till you posted saying it's not a big deal. I just thought what you said was so wrong that it moved me to post.
Edit: just another point. Imagine a cop riding directly behind you seeing you flash your brake lights so often. You don't think that's gonna make them watch you harder? Increase the chance of being pulled over for an inspection? Who needs that?Last edited: Apr 18, 2018

In any industry you have to pay your dues, which I have.
No offense to anyone but trucks now are nothing but plastic electronic junk. I've driven plenty of junk in my life, but the whole thing with all of it- Electronics sensors wires thinking for the driver automatic transmissions lights coming on with the jake brakes, engine fault codes wiring harnesses, computers, electronic injectors...
All of this nonsense and stupidity only creates more problems more expense and it makes drivers lazier, stupider and in most ways worse drivers than ever before.
Real drivers check their oil and water and belts and washer fluid and all that stuff every morning. Ahh, but nowadays
Why do that? We have little bells and lights that go ding ding ding ding ding. I can be lazy that's not part of my job.
Real drivers watch their gauges while they drive. Why on Earth should I do that? The computer does everything it'll just tell me when I have a problem.
With these beautiful wonderful computer trucks you don't even have to worry about fixing them. Plug your computer in and you'll get a code that's supposed to tell you everything you need to know. Yeah right. Tell that to the guy on this forum that spent $24,000 trying to fix his truck and he still not done yet. And the deeper he gets into it the more he finds other people having these type of problems...
All complete and total absolute stupidity.
I'll tell you how stupid it is. There's no more accelerator Rod or cable. All done electronically now.
Remember all the Toyota cars accelerating out of control? Why do you think that is? Because for whatever reason the powers-that-be have made computers to be the gods to decide even if you live or die. And yes people have died- MANY PEOPLE- from those cars accelerating out of control because of the stupidity of using something electronic rather than mechanical. How insane is our world that human death has come from this stupidity? The human lives don't mean anything. Computers rule! What BS.
And if there is a driver behind a truck that the brake lights flash and flash and flash and flash and flash and flash, it will condition the driver behind that truck to not believe those lights sort of like crying wolf. You'll probably hear of fatalities resulting from this stupidity also.
I'm a very simple-minded guy. It just makes sense to me that your brake lights come on.... when you hit your brakes. In this world of stupidity, I feel like Einstein being able to make that statement.
Yes I have paid my dues and I'm out of company trucks.
And I thank God every single solitary day for my beautiful wonderful mechanical trucks that do exactly what they're supposed to do every time, reliably and dependably with minimal cost.
The rest is complete and total worthless expensive problematic plastic junk.Last edited: Apr 19, 2018

Many years ago I remember seeing cars with a little traffic signal - looking device set up in the rear window facing rearward.
When the driver was accelerating, it was green; when the driver was coasting or engine-braking it was yellow; when the driver was on the brakes, it was red.
Maybe if trucks had a yellow light to indicate coasting or exhaust brake usage it would be better than the stop light signal being used today. The exhaust brake is as much for coasting as it is for stopping anyway. -
Only problem is. Red is the only allowed color for tail and brake.
I don't how them people are getting away with yellow lights or blue dots. -
has anyone had any luck turning the volume down for lane depart system? My drivers cant think straight with all this noise. I have heard it and it stupid loud. Dealer wont adjust volume for drivers. NO one can expect a driver to have to deal with this.
