Drug-free, homeless trucker soon to be on the road again

Melvin Lee Bennett said he never cried. To him, it was sign of weakness. His life depended on being tough.

Bennett was living on the streets of Jacksonville, eating out of Dumpsters and searching for a way to get high. Every night, he was afraid he was going to die.

Now, Bennett said, he cries all the time - tears of joy. He's been living at the City Rescue Mission on McDuff Avenue for more than a year. While living there, he said he has gotten clean from drugs, found redemption in God and even a possible new career.

After completing a course at Florida Community College at Jacksonville, Bennett regained his commercial driver's license.
