Have they told you that you needed one?
-
Most drivers I know would cheat the system. Take medicine and know where you blood sugar is before you leave the house to take the test. Don' volunteer information.
-
That isn't cheating the system. It's doing what you are supposed to do as a diabetic. I take meds and eat in the morning. I check my blood sugar. If it is in range I head out. If not I drink water or move around a bit and that gets it within range.
-
If I may let me express your comment another way. A lot of drivers have out of control diabetes. They make no attempt to keep it controlled. Then a bit before an upcoming physical they change how they eat and test to make sure their blood sugar is under 160. I could write another 1000 words about how dangerous a condition out of control diabetes is. The FMCSA is just as aware that drivers do this as they were aware drivers were (making up) physicals and medical cards. The advent of computers and printers was the driving force behind that. The FMCSA fixed this, and at some point in the future I see a move from that urine dip to an A1C test. Trust me, if you have out of control diabetes you won't get a medical card or at best maybe a 3 months one if your A1C is elevated even IF you attempt to in the days before a physical (to get religion), it won't work.

I worked with a guy who had one, depending on your state it could take several weeks. He also had to get a new physical every 3 or 6 months.

There is no waiver for type 2 but only for type 1.
You can't cheat, the examiner can ask your doctor about your health condition.
You get caught, your cdl will be suspended becuase you will lose your dot physical.
As for how long it will take, I have a driver who has type 1 and I hired him when he applied for the waiver -did none trucking work for me until he got his waiver - after 3 months, he got his waiver. He was well documented by the way. -
That's not entirely correct, If you are a insulin taking type 2 you can get a waiver but you have to prove you are managing your levels. the reason being is insulin CAN cause a low blood sugar index and you pass out while driving.
Normally a high level is not a problem for driving but long term high sugars create serious health problems. -
Is the op on meds or insulin?
-
I'm glad you made this comment. There is a misconception out there that type 2 diabetes is only managed by pills. In some cases with type 2 diabetes pills will not fully work. I am a type 2 diabetic and I still take metformin with Lantus and Novolog insulin for management. The only problem is these insulin's are VERY expensive. A vial of Lantus can be as high as $130 and once opened is only good for 28 days.
