So a good dispatcher will consult realtime traffic bottlenecks on your route and use that to plan your pick ups and deliveries or is that the role of the driver?

I like depressing music when I start to get stressed. I can get the unimportant knee-jerk stuff out of my head and remember what is better for the long term.tinytim Thanks this.

This is an old thread but still a great topic IMO. Thanks for bumping it.
Traffic can be a 'reason' for running behind if you couldn't have been there sooner. If you were wasting time in the truck stop and cutting things too close then it is indeed an 'excuse'.
I agree it's a stress trigger for lots of drivers and can lead to impatience and bad judgement.
There's an old saying about serenity, courage and wisdom that comes to mind. -
Suck it up, cupcake. You could have a real ####ing job. Do you want to work for a living? Then drive and quit #####ing.

It's all about communication. The norm is to stay in touch with your dispatcher and they will contact the consignee. Back in the 80's it was a whole different world. I would be up all day, get loaded later than I expected because of their fault and then be expected to run all night to get it there on time. If you were late, they would try to fit you in somewhere which usually meant the end of the day depending on how bad they needed the product. I knew that part of trucking and me were not going to get along at all. Tried flatbed for awhile.
I eventually found a long term solution to that problem. I became a car hauler because there are no appointments and many times I can deliver after hours. You simply lock the vehicles up, drop the keys in the drop box and away you go. $$$$$$$$ -
“Good dispatcher” is similar to a unicorn. You hear the stories but never actually see one.
