It says in the article he was walking through snow. That grass is awful green for recent snow.
Lepton1, DTP, All4Safety and 3 others Thank this. -
Let me get this right, his GPS took him the wrong way, he gets stuck, but is familiar enough with the area to figure out how to hike to a place where he can get home? Something smells about this, and it isn't the potato chips.
Lepton1, lovesthedrive, DougA and 1 other person Thank this. -

He's nothing but a dumb ###. There are so many ways he screwed up. As people have pointed out,he lives local but needed a GPS. He also started walk at midnight right after he got stuck. He should have stayed with the running truck where he had shelter in warmth. He should have waited until daylight to get a better assessment of the situation. He more than likely would have been able to simply disconnect the tractor from the trailer.
This quote sums it up:
"He took his cowboy boots off and put on flip flops," Henry said.

Personally If it was me, I'd have disconnected from the trailer and bobtailed into town.
I'd also have taken a couple bags of chips and left an IOU..
Perhaps I'd have used the chips to mark my trail.Lepton1 Thanks this.
