Getting ready to go to school. The school I'm hopefully attending gave me apps for several of the companies that they work with regularly. The three that I like the best so far, based on what I've read on here and other research I've done are Gordon Trucking(WA State), Roehl, and Transport America. I feel pretty confident in accepting a job with any of these 3 companies based on what I've found through research. I know that no company is going to be perfect, esp for a rookie, so I'm just hoping to find one that is good to start with. Anything I should know about these 3? Or any suggestions on other companies to look into? Thanks.

Hey josh of the three... Gordon. They are hard to get in with but are worth it from what I hear. Roehl isn't bad but SLLLLOOOOWWWW trucks. make swift look fast. TA from what I have heard isn't that good. Now remember this is all just hearsay not honest exp. Make the best choice for you bro and GOOD LUCK:yes2557:

Yeah I'm going to Gordon in a few weeks after school and I did a lot of research on quite a few co's..I have heard nothing but great things about GTI and how good they treat they're drivers. You're right about no company being perfect...ain't that the truth. I guess it really depends on how much freight is moving in your area and whether a company is hiring there...I talked to some guys back east and they were told that GTI wasn't hiring right now....:biggrin_25510:

I use to OTR back in the mid-80s, Gordon was one of the best then. 5 years ago I was thinking about going OTR and Gordon offered me a job, said I would be out 2 weeks at a time, they have a Terminal 150 miles from where I live. I don't think you'll find a better place to start, good luck.

Rocknroll, Gordon is my first choice of the three. I'm surprised to hear that Roehl's trucks are that slow. Mainly just because I thought Swift was the slowest on the road. Anyhow, I have heard so many good things about all 3 but I've seen fewer bad posts on here about Gordon and their SAFESTAT numbers are superb. Roehl and TA also have very good numbers and I haven't heard a lot of bad about them on here, so they are staying on the list primarily because I know that Gordon will be hard to get on with.
Nicnat, in response to what you said about Gordon not hiring, I was chatting online with a couple of their recruiters and they definitely did not lead me to believe that they weren't hiring, but we will see. Thanks for the tips.

Gordon is a great choice. I spent 5 yrs researching the trucking industry, Watkins/Shepard was first on my list, Gordon was #2. I start with Watkins/Shepard on 2/2, but if that did not work out it was going to be Gordon. Lot of Gordon trucks in the Tacoma area, they have a great safety record.

Yeah W/S is my second choice but what concerns me is their 10 day orientation. I want to know all the ins and outs dealing with everything on the road....I can't see how they can show you the things a trainer can show you on the road in 10 days. But then again, they believe in their system and there's a lot of drivers out there of theirs that are doing just fine...:biggrin_25526:

good thing you took W/S, Gordon is not hiring from WA period because of the lawsuit that Larry Webster brought on Interstate, Gordon has frozen everything pending the outcome of that lawsuit, they just don't wanna risk anything.

i'm having a tough time myself finding a company that will hire a student from WA. W/S is being super picky about who theyh take and i'm holding off on going to school until i find at least 1 company who will hire me after i'm out.

short of werner, swift and systems transport, no other company is hiring a student driver from WA.

Wetsand-I'm pretty much doing the same thing you are. I don't want to spend the money for school until I know I have a job with a good company. I have a pre-hire from US Xpress and I would probably be ok going with them if I had no other options, except that I would prefer to drive a regular transmission. I'm holding out to hear from Gordon. I live in Indiana, and have spoken to a recruiter and haven't heard anything about a hiring freeze in this area so I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I was scheduled to start school at W\S on 2\2, but they called me yesterday and said they couldn't bring me on because they are not seeing the usual turn over. Matt told me he wasn't sure when they would start hiring again but it sounds like they are on a hiring freeze regardless where you live.
