My wife and I currently pull dry vans for TSMT and have been O/O with them for a couple months and the revenue isn’t really where we would like it to be. I would be happy with 7 to 10K net per week and our average is closer to 4. We both possess secret clearances and perfect driving records and have an almost new truck. I have heard rates are up everywhere so I don’t get why my company is giving us toxic waste loads that pay $1.65/mile. Hauling toilet paper should pay better than that.
My questions are:
1. If we came to Landstar would we need to get our own trailer since it requires DTTS trailer tracking to haul their loads.
2. Would we be able to get access to DOD freight? Does LS even need more DOD teams? I don’t want to get into a situation where we are the new kids on the block and the agents have their favorites and we get stuck hauling cheap freight waiting for a spot open up on the DOD board. If there isn’t a need for our services at Landstar it would make more sense just to stay put.
3. Is it easy to use the Landstar load board to find freight moving virtually anywhere you want to go? I know it wouldn’t be high paying freight unless you got lucky but yesterday we dead headed all the way from the bay area to Washington state to get home because my company supposedly couldn’t find any freight moving from California to Washington. If I had been with Landstar would I have been able to pick up a load and at least pay for the fuel money getting back?
If you haul AA&E for LS I would love to get your take. We will probably call Landstar soon but I’m sure their recruiters will paint a really rosy picture, or just outright lie, so I would put more weight on what you have to say.
Landstar AA&E, is the money really there?

Bummer. I hope I didn’t miss sonething good.

I was quoting an OP leased to Landstar. But he has a Conestoga trailer. Wrong information.
-
I need to get flatbed training if thats where the money loads are.
-
Well, @fortycalglock has an open deck leased to Landstar. I think he can get you some info on flats and steps.

In my opinion the recruiters where upfront & honest when i leased on. I asked specific questions, and got the correct answers.

The AA&E couples always seemed to be a tier above the pack. I purchased my trailer from an open deck couple in the AA&E division. They used it as a 2nd trailer for preloaded containers. That says a lot to me. They they were doing so well that they bought a second trailer with one truck in order to expedite their operation.
I’ve heard more good than bad. Teams have increased in value since the ELD mandate. I doubt that markert within landstar is flooded, but there are vets who have been there. LS load board is simple, and if you buy your own trailer you revenue increases by a noticeable amount.

Landstar has company owned AA&E trailers that you can pull. Many of us BCO's also have trailers you could pull to get started. Freight here is booming! The first qtr of the year was our best QTR ever, bar none and it doesn't seem to be slowing any. If you want to go Flatbed Landstar does have platform training that they offer for free. Yes, the longer you are here the better the relationship with the different agents. You will be able to make a decent living though as you get acquainted with the different agencies and it just goes up from there. We have been here 6 years and have increased revenue every year.

The load board for AA&E is the qualcomm. Everyone gets the same messages. FAK freight Landstar online is a great tool as you can set up different load alerts and receive those alerts via email or a phone call. At this point in our career at Landstar we get 95% of our freight from agents calling us. You will find that will be the case with you the longer you are here with the company.
