    So I've just begun the process. Let me know if I'm doing it the correct way. Signed up for my EIN and then signed up for my USDOT number. Now I'm contacting CHP for a CA number then I will be able to fill out my MCP applicated for the DMV.

    When is the best time to get insurance in this ?

    Numbers usually take 2-3 weeks at most. Best be getting your insurance set up now.

    Will an insurance company be able to get me a policy with just my dot number ?

    As long as you already have a truck/trailer. They can't offer an exact quote until they know the type and age of your equipment.
