About to buy a 2013 Volvo with 313k mi on it, looks good, good shape, ext. warranty, virgin tires. Great deal huh? Well seems as though me being a first-time buyer, I've come across a rock & hard place. Any REAL HONEST & NON comical ideas and advice would be very helpful.
I'm a 5-year veteran driver. Have saved up & ready to make the plunge in the oilfields of Midland. The vehicle will be delivered to Primm NV. for "outta state delivery". Then I'm hearing that no taxes to be paid in any state as I'm trying to Apportion the vehicle in Texas. The only problem is getting it to Texas without paying the Calif. sales tax (ouch), must be set up as "APPORTIONED" vehicle in Tx. but gotta go to the office first time... ANY IDEAS HOW TO PULL THIS OFF???
How to purch. in Calif. (no temp plates), then drive legally to Texas to register?

Unless you were a California resident registering it as a truck in California you wouldn't pay sales tax in California no matter where you took delivery.
You may be able to get a temp tag from Texas to reposition the truck. Regardless of how you register it the temp tag is just a means to move it not a provisional IRP tag.
Personally; I have bought trucks half way across the country and just drove them home title in hand. Be sure to cover ANY DOT MC or name on the truck. If you are afraid of POE's just avoid the scales.

Very common in California, people make a living delivering trucks out of state to avoid sales tax.
My question is why do people go half way across the country to buy a used truck, my guess there should be one just as good in Texas, especially when buying a non specialty truck. -
Yeah RV purchases work the same way. Buy the RV in Ca. and take delivery in Ahrenberg, Az. (to avoid Ca. sales tax) Check into what Tx. motor vehicle requires, also see if you can get a in-transit permit from Ca. DMV. I'm assuming the selling dealer will transport it to Primm with a dealer plate. Most RV's I delivered to Az. the buyer turned right around and headed back to the same city he purchased it from !

With all the people out there who like to throw lipstick on a pig and flip it, I dont really think its unreasonable to drive halfway across the country to make that size of an investment for the right truck even if it is just a cookie cutter spec

Wife purchased a van in California (no rust) as it was explained to us if you took delivery in California, you paid California tax & again in your home state. She had to sign a stack of papers, one agreeing that vehicle would not renter California for 1 year, then had it put on a truck & shipped out. If you have the title in hand, I doubt you'll be able to get a temp.tag. if not you may get one in your home state. As said cover all names & #'s left on truck, maybe an inconspicuous not for hire sign, & no matter how legal you are ,I'd try to avoid all scales. What dot man A in state Z thinks is legal dot man B in state X may not.

I bought two trucks in Arizona and one in MO. There are no pre egr trucks in good condition around here with no rust.

I did go to another state to get my current truck. But getting it home was easy, loaded it on my trailer and hauled it home.

Im doing the exact same thing but in the opposite direction. Im buying in indiana, or most likely, texas(for some reason theres very limited to no selection of forward axle macks here unless new) and moving it back to california where i live. So all i have to do is just call cali dmv and tell them i need a in transit permit and im good? What about insurance during that transit time?
