Responding to your original question I would choose the 980 if your looking for ssb, I have owned a 959 and currently have a 99v2 but bought them with the sole intent of using regular am not ssb, the ssb on the 980 reminds me alot of a Phillipines 148 GTLF, in a word, excellent.

While I agree they’re both 4 watt radios out of the box, the 980 tends to not tune up as well as the 979 models. The audio of a 980 is clear, I agree, but is lacking.
Of course I prefer an Anytone AT-6666 with a SRA-198 microphone, but to each their own.Highwayman1224 and wolverine11 Thank this. -

I’ve been very happy with my Uniden 980 but if you don’t need the SSB then I would get the Uniden 880. Same performance and quality plus I like the user controls on the 880 better.

One thing that bothers me about Galaxy... Here is an image of the antenna connectors on a Galaxy 959 (foreground) and Uniden 980 (background)...
With the Galaxy you can attach the coax as tight as it will screw on but it will still be loose. You can wiggle it around and know it's not making a good connection. I'm sure it could vary somewhat with different quality of connection on the coax, but I'm not impressed.wolverine11 and slim6596 Thank this. -

Spend a few bucks more and go for the 86V, I love the #### out of mine. It's a 979F with dual finals and the upper and lower 40.
Did I mention I love the ####ing #### out of it?slim6596, Tensleep440, Slowmover1 and 1 other person Thank this.
