I don't think so AfterShock...I just happen to like Cat engines...many of the guys I know have Cummins...not so much Detroit, but I think that is just company or driver preference.

No problem whatsoever, I am always happy to answer questions whenever I can...and believe me...If I don't know the answer I'll be the first to say so! There's no such thing as a dumb question as far as I'm concerned..only stupid answers. The way I look at it...if you didn't want to know you wouldn't ask!

Don't sell yourself short! All it takes is patience, common sense & a bit of practice! Things just move slower in the extreme cold...nobody gets in a real big hurry...the expression of "keepin' her between" the ditches comes to mind! Cause on this road the ditches can be deadly...also pretty hard on the equipment!

Minus 25 to 30 degrees is 'bout the coldest I've experienced.
And, would y'all believe --- it wasn't in Southern California?

That right thar comes with age, too.

And I'm thinkin' that the equipment appreciates that.

I run a Detroit in Edmonton, and find it relatively cool in the winters. As far as I understand the CAT and Cummins do better further north. Maybe thats where the preference comes in?

 

Now that's entirely possible Etosha, I have also heard that Detroits are more fussy in the extreme cold.

 

"Extreme" cold?
Here in SoCal, ...... that'd be 'round 30 degrees
ABOVE zero.
Here, freezing is not an option.
It's an impossibility.

 

Now Aftershock...I have to tell ya it has warmed up considerably in the last couple of weeks...we went from a mind numbing -42C...I think it's about the same in F by then...to a balmy -14C...that would be around 5 F I think...###### near T shirt weather!I know the last few days I have managed to leave my long johns at home...OH only 4 more months till spring!

As I said to my Dad when he caught me on the phone a couple of weeks ago at Watson Lake...he was complaining about the cold, I think it was around -20C (right around 0 F) & I laughed & told hime that cold was a relative thing as it was -52 where I was & -20 seemed awful warm from where I sat!

..and WildKat if u happen to read this, are u familiar with a company called Precison Drilling in Alberta, they have drilling wells in Nisku & service wells in Lloydminster, Clairemont, Brooks, & Red Deer; have ya been to any of those places drivin the ice roads?

 

None of those places are on ice roads. They are all in central-south Alberta.
