I just got laid off last month from a day job. Worked for 5 years over the road, to have enough experience to even look for one. It was a great job. Home every night and all weekend. Averaged about 55 hours a week, 20 minute drive to the shop and $17.50 an hour, time and a half after 40. Worked for a forklift distributor and when the economy went sour, they started cutting the budget. I was low man on the driver totem pole, out of 8 drivers in four locations in the southeast, so I got the axe.

Good luck finding one, I haven't had any luck in four weeks, so I'm looking at OTR again.

    Hey Kabar:

I have to agree whole heartedly!!! I went from OTR to local. In the 2 months I worked the shortest day I had was 12 hours. The schedule was tight, some days 550 miles and 8 to 10 stops and they expected you back in the yard every night. Most days no time for lunch. Had a 1 hour commute (30 mins 1 way). By the time I got home, showered, ate some food, I was in bed at 20:00 (8:00 PM to the lay person) and up at 02:30 (2:30 AM to the lay person). In fact there were some days when I got back to the yard I called my wife and advised her I was sleeping in the truck. Local work sounded good but it took an enormous toll on me, I was exhausted and tired all the time. In all reality I think I saw my family less working local than OTR, I was home every night, but I was in bed. Weekends were spent catching-up on sleep. I went back to OTR. Just beware and I know we use it way too much on this board, Sometime the Grass isn't always Greener.
