Some of the honest estimates of how many drivers will be needed are estimations based on straight line projections of today. For example, my business is growing 4% per year and we ship 90 truckloads per week. Do the math and you conclude we'll need 94 loads per week next year, 97/wk year 2, etc. etc. etc. Industry groups and numbskull journalists will only notice the projection that accumulates the estimation from whole industries over a long enough time to reach an eye-popping number. It's like saying it was 68 degrees when I woke up, 74 degrees when I got to work, 83 when I ate lunch. At this rate it will be 200 degrees by the weekend.

One reason we had a housing bust in 2008 was key people were estimating housing demands based on projections that assumed the "hair on fire" rate of home buying would continue forever.

They ought to build truck stops with 150 inoperative fuel pumps and 4 parking spaces so all of the rookies, and lazy super truckers will have a place to park.
