Hi all - I want to eventually hope get in with a tanker company, but they all want tanker experience first. Hmmm....
I am a noob with 4 months van team driving with my wife. (TX endorsements though).
I realize I need more mileage and experience, so after a couple of years I hope to go the tank route. How to do this when it is a classic loop - no job without tank experience, no tank experience without a job?

I know Schneider will hire you straight to tankers, but last I knew they were only hiring experienced drivers. You might give them a call. I don't know what they consider "experienced."

Having recently talked to Superior, I know they will hire inexperienced drivers. The only reason that I'm not going with them is that neither of the two terminals that I spoke with expect to have any openings until March '09, if then. They did, however, encourage me to check back with them then.

It depends of what kind of tanker job you're looking for. If you what to go OTR or local just depends mostly on what you would be hauling. I can only speak for gasoline and diesel and there are some companies that will hire without tanker experience. None that I know of will hire with no experience. Of course you can expect the job to be the lowest paying job in the market but that's how you get experience.
I know a few drivers that started this way and they set their goals to work for the best and after a few years they got there. Working for a major oil company is the best job you can find anywhere in my opinion. But just like anywhere else they are cutting back so you really have to be lucky and willing to go where the jobs are.
Once you do get tanker experience then you can go where you like and work for whom you choose. I've seen drivers that have changed companies many times and it's really no big deal because they all know each other. If fact I've seen a boss leave and take alot of drivers with him to another company. The petroleum market is funny because one year X company may be number one then the next year it may be another company. It all depands on what the sales department is doing to promote the product.
If you do decide to haul petroleum products then you'll most likely be hired on by a common carrier that hauls anybody's product. Your goal should be a company that owns the oil reserves, pumps the oil,transport the crude,refines the crude,has it's own distribution system, and owns some of the stations. Those are the companies that have the best of everything. -

From the website of a company in the NY metro area, I have worked for, regarding driver qualifications: I left off the name of the company, so it wouldn't seem I was soliciting for them.
When I went to work for them, I had only freight (van) experience. I had Hazmat & Tanker endorsements. You rode for about a week or two with an experienced driver and he taught you the loading procedures for petroleum products. During the course of your employment, you may go in to work and it's a slow day and they'd put you with another driver to learn asphalt, bulk cement, jet fuel, av gas or some other product and you'd still get your pay rate.
At the time I worked for them you were either assigned day shift, starting at 3:00 am or night shift, starts 3:00 pm. It's a seven day/ 24 hour operation so days off aren't always on the weekend.
All in all, I think it was great work and I'm just sorry I didn't get into it earlier in my career. -
