If you're leasing on, you'll need a copy of the signed lease agreement to get your plates (even if you set up your own IRP/IFTA). You'll also need to get NTL/Bobtail insurance. Probably cheaper through your carrier but if you get it on your own I would recommend Roemer. You'll need both to get plates.

If you're going independent with your own numbers you'll be paying around 10k-24k a year and the only people that will most likely take you will be Progressive. You'll need to have an active authority to leave with plates if going independent. I've never heard of temp tag issued anywhere for a Class 8 CMV. Maybe the person about was thinking about a Hunter's Permit. If so, I don't think they give those out unless you've recently terminated a lease with a carrier.

Anyone suggesting you to waltz into your local DMV expecting leave with a registration is delusional. Hate to break the news to you but at some point you're going to have to deal with those mean people in the Ohio IRP office. You will not get anything without them unless you use all of your carriers credentials. The answer you get isn't always the answer you want. I suggest spending some time reading your state's IRP manual for a firm grasp of what you're getting involved in. Your base plates are going to be at least 12k for your first year.

Nothing delusional about it. Done it several times. You dont need any commercial vehicle credentials to put a temp tag on a tractor to bring it home after you purchased it. It's not being used as a commercial vehicle for hire at this time regardless of what you plan on doing with it in the future. At some point yes of course when you deal with the IRB

I am a member of the buy your own tag crowd. That being said, as a first time O/O I would recommend getting the tags through the carrier. For those of us who have been around a while and are not going anywhere, get your own stuff! :)

I've run under my own authority and been leased to someone as well. In both instances I bought my own plates. Under your own authority, you need EIN, LLC filed, name registered with the state, a DOT number which any one can get in 5 minutes doesn't require insurance to be in place. Then get insurance, then MC number. Make sure you paid your 2290 tax or have proof of it. You can also sign an affidavit stating the person you bought the truck from is responsible for the past 2290 taxes. that's what I know

It's a Class 8 vehicle. There's no way around the "commercial" designation. At least that's what FL, MD and PA all told me not too long ago.

MD, nor PA would never give out a set of Apportioned plates with an inactive DOT/MC number. In fact, MD will revoke your plates and PA will hit you with an entire year's assessment. That's going to be about 1600 dollars. They're both PRISM states too so I'm sure that makes things much more convoluted.

PA will issue a temp plate. I bought my current truck there in 2014. I walked into the DMV near Saylorsburg with the Title, sales affidavit, written bill of sale and proof of insurance. 20 minutes later I walked away with a set of paper plates. Maybe some states are different or it may even depend on the clerk. All your doing is transporting a newly purchased vehicle to your home at this point and apparently up until now is what most states viewed it as.
