Finding a driver is easy... Finding a dependable one is the problem anymore...

This is so true! Looks like I'll end up terminating another one this week. Had a customer reject 5 cases on Wednesday and he didn't bother to let me know. He let the broker know but now my driver is driving around with 5 damage cases in his cab waiting in what the customer wants to have done with them. Here it is Friday and no answer yet and I found out about this this afternoon! Driver took one picture of the product before he moved it, didn't fight with the receiver about how they didn't say a word about damaged products until after they give him paperwork so no way to see where the damaged product was in the trailer. Such a cluster frack! Worst part is, if the customer proceeds with a claim on this the broker will hold all money on every unpaid load we've done with them until the claimis settled. That's sitting at $45k so far this past 2 weeks plus the loads we're on now.

Ask the driver why he didn't call, "oh I just wasn't feeling like talking that day. I thought letting the broker know was all I need to do. "

Can 5 damaged cases really stop payments on that much?

By law any cargo claims are independent of the transportation charges so they shouldn't hold anything back, let alone previous loads. However most guys sign that away by not reading the set up packet the broker sends over.

For your companies sake, I hope it is not TQL.

Yeah, my company had to put TQL on a no pull list because one small claim put a stop payment on all loads. Our fleet have over 120 trucks and had a lot of invoices with TQL. This is just a way for them to delay payment.

I am tempted to hire a driver because i have an extra trailer and truck and business is great right now. I have been burned in the past due to maintenance issues and incompetent drivers. If rates stay at current levels for the next year, it might be worth it to buy another truck or rebuild my older truck.
