Down to the wire now. I've been out of work for 5 weeks, no money left from Christmas and had to bury my little brother right after Christmas. That took the last money we had. I no longer have the luxury of time and will be working for either Barr Nunn or US Xpress on Monday. I'm scheduled for orientation with both, but still waiting to hear from BTC and a local job. I'm primarily a flatbedder, but have pulled some dry vans.
Tomorrow, I have to take a load over to Atlanta, for the casual company I've been driving for since being laid off on 12/10. This is only my second load since then. So, I'll be gone more than half the day, leaving only tomorrow afternoon and Friday. No way any company can get me approved in that short a time. Already had a half dozen "Thanks, but we're not hiring in your area at this time."
Here's the deal. I'm married, with a young daughter (7) and live in northwester SC, just off of I-85 and not far from I-26. I was over the road for almost 5 years and don't look forward to doing it again. I've been home every night since June and like it.
The Barr Nunn job is with their Southeastern Hometime Fleet, home on weekends, at 34 cpm, with band pay for shorter runs, up to 88 cpm for under 100 miles.
The US Xpress job is with their Eastern Fleet, home every 7 to 10 days, at 38 cpm.
You guys that have driven for them recently, or are now driving for either, are those home times realistic? I know this time of year, miles are scarce. How many miles are you getting now?
Barr Nunn, US Xpress, Barr Nunn, US Xpress.....

I would go with Barr Nunn before I ever thought of going with USX

At USX they have the Dollar General account located in Jonesville, SC just under Spartanburg. If things haven't changed it is 2 days off for every week out and they usually don't have loads on Saturday and Sunday. You will have to leave Sunday night to get to your stop for Monday.

Barr Nunn...nuff said. -
My hubby drives for US Xpress. He went with them as his starter company long before we found this place to see all the post about any company.
I can tell you that US Xpress has issues but from what I read on this forum they have the same issues as every other starter company. And compared to what I have read about a few of these companies they have far less than some.
He has stayed out as little as two weeks and as many as four weeks by choice depending on how many days he wanted to come home for. In the seven months he has been there they have had him home 100% on time for the day he requested. That may change but so far....knock on wood....that has not been an issue.
The miles were pretty good in the summer and early fall but did take a nose dive in December. However, after the six month mark I suppose he has earned some stripes and he is now getting good loads. He will get 2400 this week which is not bad considering how slow things have been.
Good luck to you and if you need to ask more I will try to help. He is a current driver so at least I can give you what his experience is real time. -
Decided to wait one more week, before accepting either. I really don't feel that God's plan is for me to hit the road and leave my family again. When my daughter was a toddler, she didn't know any different, but now that I've been home nightly for nearly a year, it will really be hurtful for us both, for me to go back OTR. I've got a couple of leads on some local work and the temp company I'm with will likely keep me busy all of next week.

hey marineVet, i got my app approved about 2 weeks ago with builders transport, they told me to call them back on jan 19th they should be taking of the hiring freeze then. Im like you i dont want to go back on the road but at least with a skate board we also know when your loading oe unload for the most part. O wait i forgot about good old gent ky. Im also waiting for McElroy to call me back they run heavy up ware i live. good luck. And after looking at barr nunn and usxpress my thoughts on thoses too (ive never worked for either) usxpress prob has alot of dedicateds you can get on after time. but they only drive auto shift dont know how you feel about that. And barr nunn there insurance looks really good. and there bonuses like good too.

I drove for McElroy for two weeks. At the time, I had 1-1/2 years as an expediter, driving a 24' straight truck and 6 months, pulling a flatbed. I told the recruiter I also had 4 years in the Marines as a heavy vehicle operator, hoping to avoid having to be with a "trainer". He said that based on my experience, he could start me at 32 cpm. I signed on, went for two weeks of orientation, then put out with a trainer. His first lesson was to show me how to cheat logs. As an expediter, I already knew that and it was one of the reasons I left that company. This trainer, had no clue on how to use the QC and I managed to teach him that. He spent most of his time asleep in the passenger seat. On day 11 with this trainer, I got a call from McElroy, saying that my pay would only be 28 cpm, since they didn't count military. Of course, I already knew they couldn't count that, I only brought it up to try to get out of having to spend 4 weeks with a trainer. We were on I-40, in Knoxville, TN, when I got the call. I pulled off the highway at the 254 mm, about 90 minutes later, told the trainer he was on his own and walked a mile to my sisters house. I was back at work the next day, pulling a flatbed, for the company I'd left.
I only bring this up to point out that you can't trust a recruiter. Know how to tell when a recruiter is lieing to you?
His lips are moving.
