I never said all are. In fact i said just the opposite. The hobby guys hurt the business guys because they add to the supply side of the ecomomic.equation. Just like the hobby truckers add to the surplus of trucks keeping rates artificially low.
Note I'm using the term hobby as a statement of how one runs their operation, not as a statement of size or volume of production.

..... you literally have a rebuttal to everything. Is there anyone you dont know because this is about to turn into pawn stars.
-
Oh come on. If you have driven a truck and paid attention to the industry for any amount of time you also know several carriers firing that description. And if you've ever lived in a rural area you know quite a few hobby farmers.
-
Ok, back to the very first statement. Increased fuel prices will hurt the non hobby farmer. <this statement is what took 3 pages for me to say because i think your only referencing hobby farmers whereas im not talking about them at all.
-
I do know a couple...maybe 2 hobby farmers, but they arent in the dairy industry around here. You would have to be an idiot to make a hobby out of milking cows in todays economy. I dont know what goes on in Florida, but Im pretty sure its not whats happening here in Pennsylvania dairy country.

No hobby farm I've ever seen is a 24 hour a day business. What you're calling hobby farm is simply a hobby nothing farm about it any more than somebody with a garden is a farmer. I know a few guys who have to work in town to get their "hobby farm" as you call it off the ground, or back off the ground. What you're looking for is anybody who's struggling to get by or just getting started to get run into the ground for some reason.Blackshack46 Thanks this.

speaking of the one hobby farmer, he sells grassfed beef twice a year. i dont do business with them because $300-400 for a quarter steer of grass fed beef is the dumbest thing i ever heard. But, we live in a place full of rich people who think they're getting a steal buying direct from the old farmer.

Cornfed beef doesn't even begin to compare to good grassfed and 300 a quarter isn't bad.spyder7723 Thanks this.

Ill try to clarify. it will hurt all farmers just like it will hurt all trucking companies/owner operators. But those that run a solid business will weather the storm and when fuel prices come back down due to the recession they will cause, the ones that weathered the storm will be in much better shape long term. Basically short term it hurts, long term it helps.

Really, so in the 30s when a lot of farmers lost everything that was a good thing, in the 80s when my grandparents lost everything but about 40 acres that was a good thing? Sorry but i dont see anything that runs people who are getting by, even if just barely, into bankruptcy as a good thing. Just because someone's having a few bad years doesn't make them a fly by
night or simply a hobbyist.Blackshack46 Thanks this.
