I ask this because I am looking to start at Prime at the beginning of May this year. I had seen a few older threads but have not seen anything that has been more recent. I am planning to get my CDL and would prefer to not be restricted to automatics only. I don't mind driving one if that's what they give me, I just would like to not have the restriction. Thanks.
Is Prime still training with standard transmissions?

At least up to current, they have manual trucks at practice pads to be reserved to practice in before test & then test out with.
Unsure if this will continue after entire fleet is finally cycled through to autos..... but, I would hope so.Hotdiggitydog Thanks this. -
A few years ago, when only one or two companies used autos, all the old supertruckers said I was wrong when I said in a few years 90% of all trucking companies would be auto. NO, it's not 90% yet, but look around it's getting there day by day, Swift, Schneider...god I could go on and on listing the major companies that have gone auto the last few years, the list will only get longer and longer....in 5 more years it will be as weird to see a manual truck as it is to see a manual car today.

Just want to add this here. I just went through a refresher here at Prime, I had been off the road for about 3 years. Went through the local program Prime has for CDL holders.
The instructors here said that the first of June they are switching all training to automatics.
Good luck to you!NoBigHurry Thanks this. -
Yes this is very true. I am a TNT trainer at Prime in the tanker division. However I still have a manual truck so I do wonder where that leaves me, because obviously I can't train new TNTs in a manual since they will have the auto restriction on their license. Hmm...NoBigHurry Thanks this.

do you know if they made the switch to autos for the testing? I can't get a hold of my recruiter to find out and I'm about ready to sign up. not sure what I'll do if I'll have the restriction if I go with prime

You will take the test in your PSD instructors truck. if they have a manual then you will test in a manual, and vice versa.NoBigHurry Thanks this.

Prime quit ordering manuals. They only get manuals if someone orders one. The odds are you will be in an "auto".

Are they switching to autos because of the sexual harassment lawsuit filed by EEOC? I mean, the joke and innuendo about stick shift just writes itself.
skellr Thanks this. -
It's only sexual harassment when people are past their Prime...
