i spoke with my doctor, regarding needing salt. he said drink lots of water. our bodies will do just fine. if you want (he continued) drink some gatorade, as it has some things that can be used. other than that, added salt is not absolutely necessary.

All the excuses for being overweight and/or obese in here make me want to vomit. Stop blaming everyone/everything under the sun except yourself. Take responsibility for your own actions. Your path is yours to walk. Unless you're metabolically damaged the food isn't the problem. I'm not saying HFCS is a good thing. Nor am I claiming the SAD diet is a healthy one. However, It's the portions and/or lack of exercise that's the true culprit for 95 percent of us. Stop making excuses for American obesity and start making a change. If not for you, then do it for your family, friends and communities. Leading by example is the best motivator a man could have. There are two great documentaries that touch on this subject of demonizing the fast food industry. The first is, "Supersize Me". It shows a guy eat fast food exclusively and it wrecks his health. The second, "Fathead" shows a man do the exact opposite by eating fast food exclusively yet he LOSES weight. I would highly recommend anyone to watch both!

I'm 5' 11-3/4" per the U.S. Navy. The last time I saw 178 pounds was in my late 20's training intensively for 4 hours a day, sometimes 6.

The other time was in my mid 30's when I nearly worked myself to death.

When I can get down in the 190's that's a 34 inch waste, flirting with 32, and I'm pretty buffed at that point. I don't think I will ever see 180. Maybe if I didn't have to do anything and could just train all day, but otherwise it's simply never gonna happen until I get sick & die.

Our perception of bodyweight is seriously warped in North America. I dropped down to 160lbs and everybody said that's too light, you're wasting away etc. Funning thing is the WHO still classified me as being overweight (I still had a gut on me lol). I'm now down to 150lbs, considered normal weight and don't look like a blob anymore.

I agree. You can make excuses or produce results. Hell I lost my first 30ish lbs of weight on just diet alone. Zero change in activity levels.

Absolutely, Driver! I lost 70 pounds in 8 months by simply eating a sane diet coupled with plenty of daily exercise. No gimmicks. No pills. No fancy machines nor gadgets. Just commitment coupled with determination.

Really at the end of the day its as simple as calories in vs calories burned. There is no magic or special tricks to it. Control the food intake and you control the weight. 1lb of fat equals 3,500 calories. Cut out a Snickers bar and a large soda every day and you'll lose 1lb a week. Here's the neat thing though. The body is constantly seeking a balance. The heavier you are, the more calories you burn just to maintain weight. Once your body re-balances at that lower calorie intake your weight loss plateaus until you cut out another unneccesary food item.

Having muscle mass definitely helps with burning calories. It takes 6 calories to support 1lb of muscle but only 2 calories to support 1lb of fat. Replace 30lbs of fat with 15lbs of muscle and you'll actually burn 30 calories more just sitting around and doing nothing.

Indeed. Homeostasis. I learned so much on my journey that I part timed as a Personal Trainer just so I could share my knowledge and help others get back on track. I quickly learned though that most people don't really want to change. 90 percent of Americans don't have the dedication nor will to pull it off. They all want a quick fix like a pill. What they didn't realize was it's about changing bad habits and this requires to actually change your life. It was extremely disheartening at first but now I've learned to accept it. In fact, I've even cut people like that out of my life for the most part so they don't poison me. It's become a self preserving mechanism so to speak. The old adage, "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink" is incredibly applicable here.
