    Good day everyone,
Here I come again, this time oil temperature rising too high. Since outside temp started warming up I’m having high temp issues with my D16. When traveling on flat most times and any little pull my temperature will easily rise to 200-210 and it stays there, the fan off course kicks on and runs for a long time before going off when the temp drops. Not much deference even with A/C off. But when descending from a hill the temp will go down to 170 easy like nothing is happening. Reading my gauges when climbing a hill the oil temp raises all the way to 250 while the coolant temp reads 208, the pyrometer will go up to 1200ish. Radiator is about six months old with new water pump, thermostat and engine coolant temp sensor, all done same time radiator was replaced to include flushing the system and refilled with fresh coolant. I’ve read different threads with similar issues where some pointing to oil cooler and others say egr cooler. Any ideas where to start? I did a boost pressure test and fount out CAC is leaking near the upper right mounting bolt and another leak at the clamp on egr pipe to cooler. I’m going to fix that this weekend. Could that be why temp issue?
Other than that truck is running and pulling fine, didn’t even notice any change in power with the boost leak.
Oh I forgot to mention engine brake quit working, first stage the exhaust brake work but the second stage engine brake is not working. All this and there’s no error codes on dash, except turbo speed sensor electrical fault code which I’ve had for sometime but i think that’s something else I just having had time to trace yet.
Any info as to where to look or start will be highly appreciated. Sorry for the long write up but I wanted to put as much info on here to make it a little easy to connect the dots.

Nasriza please come to the rescue!

Do you have a fresh pressure cap on the driver side of the expansion tank?

If not, get a fresh one.

Also, highly recommend reading my thread about installing a manual fan switch and if it's really hot just leave it on.

250° oil is not a problem. My 2016 truck runs 240-250° oil all the time.

I would recommend semi or full synthetic oil for the protection though.

Oh.... And yes...boost leaks will contribute to heat load on the motor it is wasted energy...

Thanks a lot for the response. I was concerned because it’s never ran this hot since I’ve own the truck so I know something is not right somewhere. Yes I read you thread about the manual fan switch and I think I’ll give it a try. This weekend I will fix the boost leak to include a new CAC and see how she does when I get out. I have replaced a new fill cap but not the one on the driver side. Every time I tried to get one they don’t have it in stock for this particular reservoir. I’ll get that cap ordered and replace that as well and see. Again thanks a bunch!

Wow I been stressing seeing my oil get to 236 degrees. I was thinking about adding an external cooler with a fan but seeing @KB3MMX temps I am good. But I just passed th 1million mark.

    KB3MMX and Oldironfan Thank this.

Syntetic oil should help drop the operating tempetature, better egr soot control, viscosity index, oxidation stability at high temperature.
I use Rottela T6 0/5w40 synthetic only, sold my last truck with 1,830,000 without inframe.
I just watched my oil temp after reading this thread few min ago. My oil temp fluctuates from 210 to 222 degrees , D13/2010, 1,178,000miles, original motor, driving I-30 Texas, 65mph, 95 degrees ouside, 25,000lbs in the box, aprox 60,000lbs total .
I read a pdf from volvo about oil capacity, shows 9.5 gallons, but I never used more than 9 gal, including 3 filters, even with 9 goes above the maximum level on oil dipstick .
Me thinking; why did they start using fibreglass for oil pan? I drove an older truck with aluminium pan, in northern Alberta (D60 if remember correct ) in oilfields, we used to warm up the oil during cold winter with torch direct flame on pan before start. Metallic oil pan has good heat transfer capability, would help cool down the oil rolling down the road; fiberglass is isolator keeps the heat inside, that's why is used in buildings isolation.
Am I right or tard? :)

D16 owner your oil temperature is normal
At 230 to 250 when climbing hill it will go up and your coolant temperature is normal D16 run at higher coolant temp
    Then d13.
As far as Jake brakes go you should change your injector wiring harness d-16 had issues with it $2500 job including harness. We had d16 with 784k miles
So lots of experience with that motor also it was pre def and dpf.

    Do not
do not put synthetic oil in D16 it runs fine on 15 w 40 we never had to add any oil ever.

I would agree with Hottrucker 001. I had a 2011 D16 for a year that I drove. Your temps for oil, coolant and pyrometer seem normal for running uphill and downhill. The D16 generates a lot of heat while climbing and that is why your coolant temp seems to go so high in comparison to the D13( when I got into the D13 I asked why it ran so cool). As for Oil I would consider just using what Volvo recommends. The D16 engine ran fine(do not ask me about the cursed DPF system, it was a nightmare). I would just keep an eye on the cooling system though.
