Washington Post in late May:
Analysis | America has a massive truck driver shortage. Here’s why few want an $80,000 job.
America has a massive shortage of truck drivers. Joyce Brenny, head of Brenny Transportation in Minnesota, increased driver pay 15 percent this year to try to attract more drivers. Many of her drivers now earn $80,000, she says, yet she still can't find enough people for the job.
About 51,000 more drivers are needed to meet the demand from companies such as Amazon and Walmart that are shipping more goods across the country, according to the American Trucking Associations. The driver shortage is already leading to delayed deliveries and higher prices for goods that Americans buy. The ATA predicts that it's likely to get worse in the coming years.
Many trucking companies are so desperate for drivers that they are offering signing bonuses and pay raises. So why don't more Americans want this job? We asked truck drivers who have been doing the job anywhere from four months to 40 years for their views.....

you really have to like driving to put up with some of the B.S...... im local but the job still has its problems.
-tomorrow is a major holiday. most of the working world is off, some drivers have to work..... i fully understand that im going to have to work..... however the additional compensation for working the holiday doesn't exist, you get NOTHING. work all major holiday for straight pay.
-you dont get hourly compensation and industry wide drivers end up sitting without pay. its quite common. they do have detention pay but then only after two hours sitting in a plant and its only $10, it's less then minimum wage in N.Y. there has been more then a few occasions with guys sitting at a milk plant for 10 hours, that only nets $80
- some companies have sketchy hiring practices and you could end up working with someone with a serious criminal record and never know it. its less then ideal to work for a company that has non-existent hiring standards...... a pulse, a class A, and a tanker endorsement is all that is required. sad.
why do i stay at this company? 1. i like driving 2. the hours work for me. 3. the route works for me i dont do plant deliveries, drop and hook. i take the good with the bad i guess.
the so called driver shortage is often the fault of the way this industry is structured along with pay and benefits. they often times make their own bed. -
