Was just accepted to Roehl driver training program today. Will be starting in the next couple of weeks. Will have date set tomorrow. Totally stoked, and recharged. Have been contemplating this decision for several years.
Use to be road warrior in corporate world and got burnt' out due to corporate suit mentality. I love the road. I have been to all 50 states and all lower Canadian provinces before the age of 40.
I just want to know how I will get my truck after training, then evolution 1 and 2? I do not expect a new one but am looking for some pointers from you vets. How many trucks currently have APU's and what is the largest size inverter I can have installed? I reside in Charlotte NC metro area and was wondering if I would pick up the rig locally, Wisconsin or where directed? If given a choice which truck Volvo, Freightliner, or International? Or go for the least miles with most comfort features?
Any other pointers will be greatly appreciated? Peace!
Pickin' your rig?

See this set of keys...it fits your truck #xxxx, find it. That's how you get to pick your truck.
The other stuff, I can't answer. -
You will find out, it varies somewhat with the company.
The wrong APU or a poorly set up one is worse than none, for what that is worth. That question should have been asked before you went there if it was important to you. Go to their website and start reading.
You need to get familiar with their practices and maintenance issues. It will probably come up sooner rather than later.judas Thanks this. -
You got yourself a great job man! Congrats!

Thanks man. By the way, was also turned down by Millis today. Then Roehl called. It's funny how things work out. Roehl was my first choice originally. I just stumpled upon TMC while searching companies and liked alot of what they had to offer. I was using Millis as a back up plan.
Have you spoke with anyone from McElroy? Do you have any other leads? -
Good lookin' out! I figured I'd give them a week before bothering them again. I may call or e-mail tomorrow. From what I've read in the McElroy thread they pretty much always cut it pretty close to the orientation date for an answer.
Other than that I have a guaranteed start date for Werner, I'm still supposed to fax my actual MVR over to Watkins-Shepard, and all the while I'm hoping Maverick will unfreeze in the meantime since I had a pre-hire there.
So it will either be really good or really bad, but at least I'm not stuck with no job offers at all. I don't really care much about the first year anyway, but you know, like you I'd rather start off right and be with a company I could stay with and eventually contract on with.
One thing's for sure, you can't shut me up on here so you'll all know one way or another! lol -
After evo 1 and 2 are completed, then you are issued a truck. The trucks with APU's have inverters with two outlets. There's a couple of 12v outlets for fridge and such. The end of your training will likely be routed towards a place that has trucks waiting to be issued. I think that's about it.
Zoomin' Zemo Thanks this. -
hey zoomin
if you dont mind me asking what was the reason you got turned away by millis
i am scheduled to start training with them on feb 16th out in wi.
just wondering if they are starting to slow down their training program also
im glad i got in when i did
i think things are only going to get worse economy wise in the near future
i do hope we hit bottom soon though -
i got my truck on friday after the evo 2 road test
The guy ahead of me got an old international w apu
mine is a 2007 Freightliner w no apu
but dsr said in next 2 wks will get a new one installed since i live in WI
home for 4 days since i have been away since 27th of Dec
you could get one of those or a volvo or an automatic
depends on the roll of the diceZoomin' Zemo Thanks this. -
Just depends on what's available at the time you test. Have even heard of guys getting tested in Gary, then getting a ride/driving with another to Marshfield or Ellenwood to get a truck. APU's are coming, but working on newest trucks first, then working their way down to the older ones.
