Many states require a medical card before you can get a comercial drivers liscense and the card must be kept up to date to keep your CDL.

fmcsa states you must have a medical card if you operate a cmv over 26,000 lbs . in ny if you have a cdl and are intrastate only you dont need one . when your current license expires , it will not be renewed without a medical card . trucks with tractor plates or commercial plates i dont bother . if you have apportioned plates which allow you to operate in other staes you need one .also all haz mat too . in ny you wont be able to renew without a card .

Don't go to Orange,CA and get pulled over; I got pulled over there a few years ago and the cop was going to write me a ticket for not having my medical card laminated!!! What a crock of you know what!! I agrued with him and even attempted to give him my motor carriers handbook and have him show me where in the world it states that a medical card must by law be laminated; needless to say he finally dropped the issue after realizing I knew better and after I told him that I listen to the Highway or State Patrol and what they say and not what a city cop says. He was beet red when he finally let me go. LOL

Interstate commerce is defined by the destination of the freight, not the truck. IOW if the loaded trailers are destined for another state or the freight originated from outside the state the local driver is in interstate commerce. If the trailer is bound for intrastate commerce (within one state) or the freight is totally intrastate commerce then state regulations apply.
Be safe.
