Using security software is more important than ever. Our tests of the latest all-in-one security suites show that good protection can shut down the nastiest viruses, spyware, and adware.

    Baack Thanks this.

Ugh they suggest Norton?! Icky poo. I've used a variety of products over the years and the last time I used a Norton product it fried the TCP/IP stack to the point that the PC couldn't connect to the Internet anymore. I had to go in and dig out Norton to fix the PC, what a pain in the caboose. Personally I use a software firewall (zonealarm), a virus scanner (AVG), a couple malware/spyware scanners, and I set up the OS to my preferences to avoid such problems (limiting administrator access, no flash, no java etc). In over 25 years I've only had one real virus. These days its just too easy to get infected. Any decent script kiddie can show you in 30 minutes how to write your own mini virus.

If Norton works for you then by all means go for it but it will be a cold day in h*ll before I put any Norton product on one of my PC's.

I agree that Norton is a terrible suite. When it first started as just an antivirus it was good.
I use TrendMicro for the basics. I also run SuperAntiSpyware to get rid of the other baddies. It works great.
When I'm home I stay behind a router and a firewall. When I'm on the road I use an air connect card with TrendMicro watching everything. So far I haven't been infected by anything.

If you are using WiFi at a truck stop be very careful. I have seen really good wireless connections that looked like they came from the truckstop you are at, but are not. Watch the spelling of the site. For example: I picked up a really strong wireless signal purporting to be (the now defunct) TruckStop.net but was really TrukStop.net. I don't know who set it up but if I had connected and logged onto my banking site I would have given away everything to the bad guys.

Good luck and be paranoid. They are out there to get you.

I quit using Norton for a few years because of computer issues. I just switched back to them this year and have been impressed so far.

I used Norton 2 years ago and puter just got slower and slower. IT buddy told me to get a free one. I have used Avast ever since with no problems. He checks it out for me every couple of months for a 6 pack of Shiner and it had been great. They have a more sophisticated pay version , but the free one has been doing great. As long as it performs and is free it is no contest. Adios Norton.

F-secure is the security suite provided by my ISP. That stuff rocks! I have had no problems. The really sweet thing is that it is provided to me free for three computers in my house through my ISP.
