Hi,
I am Cretho and new to this site. Have been trucking for 36 years and have used CB radios but really don't use one a lot. I have a radio but just wanted to maybe find me another one I posted an ad on Craigs list in my area for a good radio and I got a reply this morning from somone about having a Galaxy 77. What is your opion of the Galaxy radio and this model? I am more familiar with Cobra and Uniden radios. He says he has had this radio tweaked and that it has 22 watts, has noise toy and that he paid over $350 and will let me have it for $100. First of all what is your opion of the radio? 2nd., does this sound like a good deal?
Thank you for your imput?

A galaxy 77hml is a 10-meter amateur radio, probably converted to C.B., hence it is not legal to use on C.B. Alot of people use them anyway, but if you get caught, the fines a apparently pretty stiff. Here's a pic of it.

squirrellsgnwild Thanks this. -

Thank you for your reply. I was just wondering if the radio and the Galaxy radios are worth the money you spend on them?
-
Absolutely, they are worth the money, I think it goes something like this, all galaxies with two digit model number are the ten meter amatuer radios, they can be converted for cb use but are not legal to use on the 11-meter band. All the radios with three digit model numbers are FCC certified cb transmitters. I run a stock DX919 in my work truck with a firestick antenna, and in my personal truck I run a DX959 with a 102in. whip. Both are great talking radios in stock form, and if you want to have it done, I hear they tune up very well.

Thanks again for your feedback. Like I said this guy says this one in a 77 and he said it had been tweaked. Said it has a noise toy and an Amp Mic. I am hoping it will be a good radio. I am supposed to talk to him today and work out meeting him tomorrow to see the radio. I really do appreciate you giving me the info that you have. As you can see no one else has weighed in on this with me.

No problem, hope it works out for you with the radio.

Does a modded CB do you any good if you're the only one that has one? With that power, I'd probably hear you from way off, but you wouldn't hear me back. Sounds like it may be more frustrating than anything.

here comes gadfly with the cb radio putdowns and a lecture!!
-
yes its nice to have a little extra power to get out. nothing frustrating about it and thats a nice radio for a good price!
-
Probably so, he does make legitimate points, I could just do without all the extra stuff in between those points. Those converted radios don't bother me, but I am not a ham. Maybe if I was on the other side of the fence I'd understand. Until then my opinion is if you want a 10-meter converted to cb, get it. I don't run them because as small a chance as it is, i don't want to get caught using one and have to pay a fine like the ones they are handing out if you do get caught.
