As a recent graduate of trucking school, I have been spinning around in circles trying to choose what company would be best for me to work for. After reading some of the horror stories of the other companies that I was thinking about working for including TMC, I keep coming back to Transport America as one of my top choices. A few of my questions are, among others, is this a good starter company, do they give good miles, do they treat their drivers well? I have seen one of their recruiters twice, but I don't trust recruiters as far as I can spit on them. What are some of your opinions on Transport America, and why do you feel the way you do about them? I was also thinking about going with Stevens Transport as well but I understand they pay pretty crumby, so I kind of shoved them to the bottom of my list of potential employers. I understand that this may or may not have been discussed already, but as a rookie to the road as well as this forum, I probably just overlooked the threads.
Thanks for any help.

Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

Hubby works there as an O/O. They're supposedly trying to trim back on hiring right now and are also getting rid of some drivers - not sure how they're decided who to can, but it's supposedly a matching freight to driver count move. They should've done it a while back. I don't know if they're doing much in the way of hiring fresh students. It might be a good learning experience if they will hire you.
I can say that right now the miles aren't great (but they're workable), but then again, the whole country is a bit slow. -
I have a pre-hire from them so far. I'm hoping getting an orientation date won't be too hard. One of my larger concerns aside from the ones above is that they make you park your truck in their terminals, and the closest one to me is about 112 miles away. I understand that if you live far away from the terminal that you can find somewhere to park your truck closer. But I'm not holding my breath.

My husband works for Transport America. He has been with a few other trucking companies in the past, and they are the best company he has worked for. Right now they are a little bit slower than normal but he still gets the jobs. The only thing that I don't like is the wait for him to come home. He has to wait for a load that will send him through "the house" so that he can come home for the weekend. To me that is the longest (I am not patient!) but other than that there is no complaints.

I'm glad to hear that he enjoys TA. Good thing I don't have anyone biting their nails waiting on me.

Hello all,
Recently graduated from CDL school. Less than perfect MVR, & slow economy limits my choices so far to Covenant, Swift or Transport America.
Before I started school Werner swore up and down that my MVR was acceptable and call them after grad. date for an orientation. No changes to MVR and now all of a sudden they choose not to accept me. ?????
Anyway I have an orientation date from Covenant and on the waiting list with Swift.
Heard from Transp. America that I was accepted today and waiting on offical orientation date.
Anyone been through training with Covenant, Transport Am. or Swift?
Which of the three is best overall for recent grad?
A bit concearned with recruiter from T.A.'s comments on "6 day orientation" and "thorough skills test". Been a few months since school and out of the truck etc.
Covenant seemed the easiest fit, but who knows?
Applied to lots, but one 18 MPH over speed must drop in a year to open more opportunities.
Any honest advice is appreciated.... -
i had a friend work for TA, had a pretty good pay check, good miles, honest detention, o/o got it better than a company driver mostly cuz they have more leverage typically. downfalls are a stripped down freightliner with nothing, very bad home time, and safety doing a good job of looking over your shoulder. big company means a lot of irregular contacts after hours and frustration of having to tell your story again at a shift change. bonus probally is the 24/7 dispatching if you wanna keep rolling. they were pretty good about keepig him far away from the house and on a tight schedule. i know he liked the money there tho for it being his first gig
-
Sounds pretty good to me.....The money anyways. Freightliners aren't my favorite trucks but they will do. Another bonus is that they are willing to hire me. I think....if they ever call me back.

What kind of rates do O/O's get there ??
-
Thanks for the info. To clairify, had to bug the mess out of the recruiter (although she was very nice to talk with) to reach her. Never calls back.
Last we talked on Fri. she had me in approved status. I made her double/triple check my MVR with safety and get back to me. (ha ha). Don't want any suprises at orientation.
Anyone been through their 6 day orientation recently? Seems a bit long. How tough are the skill evaluation tests?
Thanks...
