With e logs the safety dept doesn' have someone auditing your logs everyday anymore. (Thats one of the reasons megas live them. Lower payroll) At some point your will be picked to look at. Hope it's not during your companies dot insp.

I check my equiptment every several hours. Tires in particular, flat bed most especially. But a formal pretrip for the working day is logged onduty and you need a vehicle inspection report with no defects. And if you did find defects, you better have a invoice from the truckstop, company shop etc showing it's been repaired and counter signed by the mechanic who fixed it. Otherwise DOT will find the defect for you and start writing against it.

Carriers are different. My carrier wants us to flag the pre-trip and log the post-trip.

Certain lights you should have in the truck, so you shouldn't get in trouble for not having a reciept.

    Good question.

When you take 8 hours in the sleeper berth for a "Split 8", you aren't required to do a pretrip. Your shift hasn't ended yet, you will log a post trip once you are done and a pretrip after taking a 10.

Actually the only requirement is whatever your company policy is.
See, FMCSA does not actually require a pre-trip to be done. The closest they come to it is you must be satisfied that all the required equipment is in working order.

And of course to answer the question literally, you log whatever you do, when you do it.

Bean Jr. and Lepton1 Thank this.
