Most identity theft via internet is from leaks in government systems, not private companies. They set laws and rules for private companies to follow, but them followimg those same rules?

Equifax is partners with LifeLock. They're both in on the scam to extort people's money for credit monitoring servicesTrucking in Tennessee and Farmerbob1 Thank this.

I dont have much faith in credit freezes. It doesnt protect your already open accounts. You have to contact all 3 credit companies each time you want to unlock your credit, and the PIN you set up to use for unlocking can be leaked as easily as the rest of your information... As you have seen with Equifax.
You're right to be upset with Equifax but dont take all that lost trust and dump it in the other two companies. They are all massive companies with monopoly-sized egos. And once your identity is stolen you are still on your own. At least with some of those credit protection programs you are insured against losses while under their protection and have free access to their lawyers. -
I do not trust any of the credit bureaus, but I refuse to help Equifax make one dime off me. I will never unfreeze my records with them. I will not take out loans in the future, so I wont need to unlock any of my credit bureau records.
I have had credit card number theft a few times and it has always been caught by the credit card company, as they are monitoring my credit card activity. So I dont need Lifelock to do what my credit card company already does, without charge to me. The thefts were small and the credit card company took care of the charges.
My wife wants to subcribe to Lifelock, but I have said no way am I paying a monthly fee of $20 plus dollars a month. I will not do it.
If someone can get a loan in my name without a credit check, I am guessing that lender is either stupid or crooked. -
Just a note about debit cards.....refuse them. As the bank is not liable if your debit card is stolen and your funds are stolen from the bank. -
I'm insured against identity theft checking and savings included. I dont keep more than 1000 in checking anyway as its not earning me any interest. Most of what I earn goes into my brokerage account. That and my Roth are my two primary concerns.
If that way works for you then thats great. I personally hate calling those ####ing people. 20 a month or whatever it is is completely insignificant, esp. If it spares me from calling having to call them. Its just my flavor. -
Sadly, a debit card can be used as a credit card unless you specifically tell your bank to fix it.

It won't let you spend more than you have yet usually, been there tried that.Farmerbob1 Thanks this.

Oh yes it will. Not only did it go over my limit, but it cost me overdraft charges until I could get a police report and get it straightened out. This is when I told the bank I wanted a real debut card. It is now. Without a pin it can't be used.Last edited: Jul 30, 2018

Yes, some debit cards are set up as both a credit card and a debit card......or is the credit card set to be a debit also.... I had the latter once. I no longer use a debit card.
