I was handed a sheet of paper showing the statute. And if I remember correctly... the Rand McNally road atlas also shows the lengths permitted in Md. Hurst

I can't point you to any literature about the restriction, but I can tell you with the utmost certainty that it does exist. I had to go from Baltimore to Hanover once, and wanted to run up 795 to 30 to the PA state line then 94 in PA to the delivery. I called motor vehicles and was transferred to size and weight and was specifically told I could not run a 53 trailer up that way and had to run I-83 up into PA.

Lol.. I actually had a cop tell me to make a turn and smash that piece of crap: his words not mine.... when I wasn’t able to turn because of illegally parked vehicles and no one responding for 15 minutes to him out there running his siren, 10 years ago. Of course, I didn’t, and they came scurrying out eventually to tickets and 2 very pissed off cops! But, it was interesting and I will never forget that! Lol

I was making a local delivery in Brooklyn and there was a car close to the corner , and the owner came running up "wait wait! You're going to hit my car!" "Nah", I told him "I'm missing by a good 1/2 inch!" He wanted to know how I could tell that I would miss it. "Simple" I told him. "If I can see daylight between your car and the tires, no matter how small it, I've cleared it".laaylor Thanks this.

Where does the word illegal come in. Where? Show me. You wont find me saying that.
I spent my life crossing that darn GWB with all sorts of trucks. The one thing that did change is 10.00 tolls becomes 106 dollar tolls northbound today.laaylor Thanks this. -
Heres a question: when did 53' trailers start to be used?
Then: when did the 55' total rule start?
If the 55' total rule was passed BEFORE 53' trailers became standard for interstate transport it is outdated and should be done away with.
With the amount of warehouses in Queens (JFK Airport and LGA) and the Bronx not to mention the ones in Brooklyn and Manhattan, any type of restriction is stupidity.Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
MD taxes people when it rains so you can rest assured they'll find even more creative ways to squeeze you dry.

You’ll be fine with a 53 footer and a daycab. Do not use any tunnels. To get into Manhattan from Jersey use either the George Washington Bridge or the Goethals and Verrazano bridge into Brooklyn from there you can take the Manhattan Bridge.

Heard last few times if you get caught with a 53 footer on RT 1 at the Conowingo, MD scales, fines are around $1,000.
