If a ProStar works for your application just be sure it has the Cummins motor. The fuel pump will be the main issue with the Cummins along with the liners, and of course the emissions.
And trust me, all of these newer EPA trucks are a crapshoot. I have seen KW's, Volvos, Petes, Freightliner, etc., with issues. None are immune.
Stay away from the MaxxForce.
Cheap 2012/13/14 international prostars. good or bad?

To save up or borrow is an on going debate. But if I get a truck for about $40,000 then take out a 4-year loan my good credit score could get fairly low interest rates and I'd be paying maybe $1,000 a month in payments if that.
I really don't think that's a huge deal. Some people pay $3,000 a month for truck payments.... those people I'm sure are owned by their truck like u say but I don't think I'd be owned by anything for just a thousand a month.
Am I being naive in saying this?
I did the math After subtracting the cost of 6.5 MPG for fuel I'm getting a dollar per mile and the cost of insurance, a hefty maintenance escrow, misc, and plates is roughly $2,000 a month.
So if I got a truck with a thousand dollars a month payments and run only eight thousand miles which is really Conservative then I'm still making $5,000 a month before taxes.
Right?!

A decent company gig will get you $6-7g a month before taxes.
Why buy a trouble prone truck to make less than a company driver?kenn2632 Thanks this. -
One thing, these new trucks, do your due diligence when purchasing. Odds are you may have issues with either the motor or the emissions or both. Emission trucks can break your bank quickly, been there and done that. I would have at least $20,000 to $30,000 in reserves, or access to it. When these trucks go, it can get financially ugly very quickly. These are not the trucks our fathers and grandfathers drove. Or me when I started. And don't depend on a shop to fix your truck unless you know exactly what is wrong with it. Been there and done that, and it has not been pretty.

If all you are getting is a buck a mile plus fuel charge in this market run run away from that lease deal
It sucks -
I would stay a company driver for that money.Justrucking2 and PoleCrusher Thank this.

I would like to say sure pay cash for your truck, but come on its a business. You take risk for reward. No don't borrow money on a boat, hotrod, motorcycle. You don't need a 50k diesel pickup or camper. A good used 1/2 ton work truck. I will borrow money on one car and that's the wifes/family car. All ways have one car safe and reliable.

I'm sorry I'm not being very clear. My company will pay me about a dollar sixty per mile if you add in the fuel surcharge, at 6.5 MPG you subtract roughly 50 cents per mile cost of fuel that's a conservative estimate and your post fuel profit or gross is about a buck a mile.
Then you just multiply the number of miles a month by $1 and subtract whatever the truck payment is, about 1500 on top of that for maintenance Escrow and insurances.
So is it a sucky lease deal if after paying for fuel I'm grossing about a dollar a mile? -
Yes.dirthaller and Justrucking2 Thank this.

I have a business and don’t borrow for it. Yes there is risk and reward but I don’t need to increase my chances of failure by bringing debt into the equation. Debt always eats and has caused more businesses to fail than probably anything else.
My wife’s car is a 2018 and is safe and reliable. We paid cash for it too.
To the OP you are being wise calculating what you think you will make doing this. Take what you think you will net and compare that with what you make driving their trucks and study the difference hard. Is it worth it considering all the risks involved?
